No one can deny that the Filipino’s colonizers have greatly affected our way of living. They have brought with them their culture when they settled in the Philippines. One of them is the Spaniards. The Spaniards’ colonization had a great impact upon our ancestors’ lives. They altered our views on religion, architecture, language, music, fashion, cooking and traditions. And I think it’s sad that, even until today, I can still see that these things that these Spaniards have brought with them are still within us. Their effect, their power is still so strong that we can’t ever be nationalists of our own country. It’s sad to realize that from the beginning we weren’t really free from them. We’re still wrapped around their finger because we’re still living the life we had when they were here. We have their blood, their culture and their religion. We have developed colonial mentality. We can never be free from them unless we change. “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” I think this is one of the greatest and most riveting quotes I have ever laid my eyes upon. It is beautifully written. It uses such simple words, yet its meaning is so deep. It makes me realize that the world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking. We are the change we seek. Sad experiences brought us where we are, why? Because we never tried to change it, we allowed it to change us. Change is an inevitable part of life; it is inescapable. It is said that if we don’t change, we don’t grow. Change is often highlighted with periods of transition. Most of us struggle with the transitions that bring about change in our lives. We resist change! Why? Because we don't know what will happen, because we don't have control over it, because we are comfortable on where we are now and change might rock the boat, or simply because we don't like it. Change does happen all the time.

The quote, " All change begins with you.", in Sean Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens", is the perfect quote to describe such a exciting, amazing, and compelling, book. In this part of the book, Sean explains how you must win the war within yourself, before you wage wars against other people, and to be honest, he couldn't have found a better quote to describe this. He said what most use 100's of words to describe, in only five. That right there alone shows you how talented Sean Covey is. All in all, I give this quote five out of five stars, not because of the person who wrote it, but because it is the most succinct thing that I have ever heard in my entire…

The film Higher Learning is a call to action. It is a film that shows people as products of their environment. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. I feel it is a bit exaggerated, but it allows people to see some of the issues that go on, on a college campus. The film focuses on three freshman (Malik, Kristen, & Remy) entering college. They enter a less than ideal new world that is filled with tension, anxiety and fear. Although the writer uses stereotypical characters, it is important to point out that although the character might be fictional; students like the ones portrayed in the film actually exist.…

“A learning needs assessment is a systematic approach to studying the state of knowledge, ability, interest, or attitude of a defined audience or group involving a particular subject” (University of Idaho, 2009, p. 3). There are two goals for a learning needs assessment. The first goal is learn what the target audience already knows, and the second goal is understand what can be done to make teaching the target audience successful (University of Idaho, 2009). On the pulmonary step down unit at Christiana Care Hospital Newark campus a learning needs assessment was conducted on if nurses knew how to perform proper mouth care on ventilator patients.…

The career plan building activity: reasoning aptitude helped me realize my strengths and opportunities. The results in the strength category were lower than I thought they would be. I scored the highest on adapting to change and that was the one that I felt I would have scored the lowest because I do not do very well with change unless I am prepared for the changes beforehand. When it came to researching, taking initiative, being innovative, organizing, and delivering results, I score 3 out of 5 possible points. I felt that with organizing and taking initiative, I would have had a higher score because I organize everything and I tend to take the initiative in a lot of situations at work, with school, and in my personal life.…

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to counsel a character from your favorite movie? Have you ever wondered what approach you would use to try and solve their problems instead of watching it on television? As a mental health counselor, clients depend on us as their last hope for answers to the issues they may be dealing with. However, we don’t possess the answers but only solutions that can help a client themselves cope and deal with their issue. In this essay I will discuss what it is like to counsel the character Remy from the movie “Higher Learning” (Singleton, 1995). I will give an overview of the movie and character, the presenting issues of the character, my approach and role to counseling the character, and the characters cultural framework influence on why I chose to intervene to counsel him.…

Research in verbal learning has as a goal the way in which people gain and retain knowledge of symbolic representation or stimuli of objects or events and the relationships among them (Tulving & Madigan, 1970). Research in verbal learning follows the work of Herman Ebbinghaus who identified verbal learning methods still used today. This paper will first review the concept of verbal learning and then compare and contrast the verbal learning methods of serial learning, paired associate learning, and free recall. The concept of mnemonics in the recall of verbal stimuli will also be examined (Terry, 2009).…
