No one can deny that the Filipino’s colonizers have greatly affected our way of living. They have brought with them their culture when they settled in the Philippines. One of them is the Spaniards. The Spaniards’ colonization had a great impact upon our ancestors’ lives. They altered our views on religion, architecture, language, music, fashion, cooking and traditions. And I think it’s sad that, even until today, I can still see that these things that these Spaniards have brought with them are still within us. Their effect, their power is still so strong that we can’t ever be nationalists of our own country. It’s sad to realize that from the beginning we weren’t really free from them. We’re still wrapped around their finger because we’re still living the life we had when they were here. We have their blood, their culture and their religion. We have developed colonial mentality. We can never be free from them unless we change. “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” I think this is one of the greatest and most riveting quotes I have ever laid my eyes upon. It is beautifully written. It uses such simple words, yet its meaning is so deep. It makes me realize that the world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking. We are the change we seek. Sad experiences brought us where we are, why? Because we never tried to change it, we allowed it to change us. Change is an inevitable part of life; it is inescapable. It is said that if we don’t change, we don’t grow. Change is often highlighted with periods of transition. Most of us struggle with the transitions that bring about change in our lives. We resist change! Why? Because we don't know what will happen, because we don't have control over it, because we are comfortable on where we are now and change might rock the boat, or simply because we don't like it. Change does happen all the time.
