Learning Needs Assessment
This papers’ objective is to identify and analyze the educational needs of nurses working in the emergency room. This paper also identifies the priorities of educational opportunities that need to be addressed and challenges that emergency departments may face where professional development of nurses is concerned.
Kaiser Permanente (KP) is a subsidiary of KP Foundations Hospital. KP Medical Group, KP Foundations Hospital, and KP Foundation Health plan all comprise Kaiser Permanente. KP is a not-for-profit health care organization that caters to more than nine million members nationwide. As of 2011, KP has nine medical centers catering to 3.5 million members throughout Southern California (Kaiser Permanente, 2011). There are approximately 500,000 health plan members in the (Kaiser Permanente, 2013).
A small sample of 10 night shift emergency room nurses at Kaiser Emergency Department (ED) against total population of *** were taken into consideration for this survey. Oral surveys were used as the method of data collection. The advantage to using this method is being the most convenient method considering the time constraints. There was also a very high rate of return of the completed surveys. Responses were immediate. Respondents had the opportunity to ask for clarification and many people express themselves better orally than writing. The questionnaires had both open and closed ended questions in order to find out the educational needs of the staff and staffing needs of the department. The survey also asked if the staff knew of any access to educational funding available to support their educational needs. The limitation includes a tendency for the respondents to tell personal stories or vent on the issues. The staff surveyed was all female which may have introduced a gender bias (McCawley, 2009).
