As a full-time college student majoring in Nursing I hope to become a RN one day. I work part-time as a CNA in a Nursing Home now. Being a CNA is very hard work. I don’t want to do that forever I want to become something better. My former co-workers always tell me I’m too young to do that kind of work and to keep going to school to better myself. Being a nurse can sometime be hard work too. Nurses have to make sure the patients are doing good and eating right. Some of the patients can get a little rude and they will fight you. When I seen that happen I was shocked and scared. The first thing the nurse did was ask me to help hold the patient down while she give him his medicine. While holding him down she was talking to him trying to calm him down. She was telling him things like I’m not trying to hurt you I’m only trying to help. He was still fighting and cursing. I couldn’t believe that happened. As I watched, I was scared. I never been in a situation like that before. However, it is good experience because nurses have to go through that everyday. I was thinking about what would I do if I was the nurse that day. It made me think about if I really wanted to a nurse anymore. I do, but I want to work in a hospital I think that would be better than a nursing home. I realized that patients have their bad and good days. Sometimes they don’t feel like being bothered or touched. Some days they don’t mind if you help them but most of the time they try to be independent. On the patient bad days you just have to have patients and stay calm. Being a nurse comes with many responsibilities. It’s an easy job but it can be difficult. I always loved helping others and caring for people that’s what made me want to become a nurse. I think I have the patients to do the job. I am learning a lot

Miranda, you did wonderful in this situation. We have all gone through situations like this, and I think as long as we remain nurses situations like this will keep arising. Being an advocate for the patient will never be easy, but we as nurses must keep persevering just like you did. If we allow ourselves to be intimidated by doctors, then our pledge of being a patient advocate will be null. Masters (2017) states “the ability of nurses to think critically and make sound clinical judgments is essential to providing safe, competent, and quality care” (p. 216). You did exactly what was required of you as a nurse, and I believe if you had not been persistent to the point of getting a cardiologist on the case, the outcome would have been dire…

Nurses share the joys, pains, and triumphs of their patients. Everyday nurses show-up for duty, receive their patients, and without hesitation begin to become a valued member of an extended family. I initially went to school with the goal of becoming a medical doctor. At the time, I believed becoming a doctor was the only way I could ultimately give back to my community through my passion for science. The decision to pursue the field of advanced nursing, developed after sharing my concerns about healthcare in the Mississippi Delta with my local family nurse practitioner.…

The nurse entered the patient's room without knocking, then proceeded to grab the blood pressure cuff and take a blood pressure, then the pulse and respirations, and pulse oximetry. Other than saying that she was there to take the vital signs, she did not speak a word to the patient. When she was done taking the vital signs, she simply left the room without another word. This nurse completed a necessary task of being a nurse; however, did not focus on anything other than that task. During this interaction with the patient, this nurse did not have a connection between herself and the patient. She did not allow an increase in energy, coherence, and creativity for the patient. She did not offer any chance for personal growth and recovery for this…

There have been many occasions in my life that I have spent time in hospitals, nursing homes and by the side of a sick relative. When my grandfather was dying of cancer, he spent as much time as he could at home with his family by his side and when the time came, he was transferred to hospital, I was 14 at the time, still very young I knew it was not about how I was feeling, this pain was his and my grandmothers. I helped look after him for the two years he was diagnosed and it was during that time, I knew where my heart was and that was nursing. With my own experience of being in and out of hospital with two complicated pregnancies, I was in awe of the nurses and midwives who did everything they could to make me feel secure and safe, I was inspired and made an already certain career choice, even more evident.…

I like to believe that there are an array of factors and values that I have encompassed throughout my life that have played a role in forming my personal philosophy of nursing. I have always viewed myself as a kind and compassionate individual who enjoys helping others. As I have previously mentioned, my mother has been an oncology nurse for my entire life. I view her as one of, if not the main influential aspects in deciding upon my career. When I was younger I always enjoyed hearing her stories or reading her letters from patients about how helpful and caring she had been. She always came home with a smile on her face and would say that even after the most stressful day, knowing that she was able to make a difference in someone else’s life, is what kept her going. I have used that as a fuel in my own career. I made it one of…

She then proceeded to talk about insulin as the only means of treating the diagnosis to the patient without any mention of any alternatives or changes that could help minimize the use of insulin. This terrified the patients making them cry because it was so bluntly mentioned that there was going to be use of insulin that included a syringe and self administration. As a mean of consolation the parents started to joke to keep the patients from crying. The RN proceeded to rudely ask the parents to stop…

I hugged him and tried to be strong as I walked away from my support system. I was pricked three times in the finger, trying to test my blood rH. The nurse asked me my age, trying to make small talk, asked me what college I went to. “I just turned 17, and I’m still in high school.” She just looked at me with the saddest eyes, I had seen thus far, and then put her head down trying to become occupied by what she was doing. In the back of my mind, I decided I needed to leave, that I was in the wrong place and I was making an immature irresponsible decision by being there. But I stayed, and I answered the nurse’s questions as I followed to the next room, for the next part of the…

Trying new things has always been beneficial for me in the past. I enjoy exploring and testing my boundaries because you never know what you might like. Although I have to admit I didn’t always live my life by this philosophy, a couple years ago was when I really felt like there needed to be a change in my life.
