During the past twenty years, historians have learned that there were at least two Continental armies, the first being the army of 1775-1776, which was mostly made of large land owners who were expecting a short conflict, untrained and undisciplined, the second Continental army was built out of the first but had more discipline, a more difficult training regime, and called for longer enlistments. The first Continental army believed the quality of their ideals and their honorable pledge to defend their homes against the British would be enough to defeat the British quickly. The first Continental army lost quickly to the superior numbers and training of the British offensive against New York. Although the army was very zealous,…

From June 2005 to September 2009, I served on the Guided Missile Destroyer (DDG) 64, USS Carney. The USS Carney has approximately 300 sailors and officers. Out of the 300 about twenty-five are officers and another thirty or so are senior enlisted. Officer’s tours are eighteen to twenty-four months long and the enlisted sailors can remain on board for up to five years. While serving aboard the Carney, I witnessed the key crewmembers turnover at least three times. After each key crewmember, enlisted sailor or officer, transferred someone needed to rise to step into a new role and a new team needed to be formed. While I did not realize it at the time, we constantly performed Human Process Interventions to ensure we were ready to answer our nations call at a moments notice. The upper echelons of the U.S. Navy go to great lengths to ensure that teams are created through a structured multi-level training process, surveys, and other Organization Development techniques.…

Despite non-selection, my pursuit of this prestigious and challenging position will not be deterred. My naval career, I have continually sought positions of greater responsibility and produced exceptional results in each of those positions. While I take great pride in being a Chief Petty Officer, I feel the experience I have acquired as a Chief will benefit any wardroom I am a member of. It is important to note that I did not submit an LDO-CWO package for FY-14 due to the time constraints I experienced while standing up Naval Beach Unit SEVEN with an under staffed office and operational commitment.…

It would be an honor and a privilege to continue my service as a Surface Warfare Officer. I had the pleasure of being assigned to the USS Chung-Hoon during my senior Midshipman cruise. While on the Chung-Hoon, I was tasked with assuming the role of conning officer. I was held to the same expectation as my running mate; I was to have in-depth knowledge of the ship’s navigational capabilities, report for duty fully prepared to assume responsibilities, and, at all times, be diligent when working in unison with the different departments of the ship in order to assure safe navigation. Working with the officers and crew on the Chung-Hoon was the greatest lesson in leadership I experienced, and serves as the point in my life where I knew I was destined to be a warfighter. I know that as a Surface Warfare Officer,…

As a child my family and I went on a cruise to celebrate my grandparents’ 50th anniversary. Being so young I don’t remember much, but for whatever reason, I remember one of the formal dinner nights we attended aboard the ship. On this particular night, the captain attended and gave a speech to his passengers and thanked us all for joining him. At the end of his speech he announced times that he would be available in the commons for pictures and autographs. Everyone was so excited to get a chance to speak with the commander of such a large vessel. A few days later, speaking with one of the crew members, my sister and I learned that the captain of the ship wasn’t the one to bring the ship into port. A specially trained harbor pilot boards the ship only to navigate it through the shallow waters of the harbor. So I wondered, “What is all the hype about? Why does everyone want to meet the captain?” A harbor pilot, or harbor master’s job, often is not recognized. While the captain also has a lot of responsibilities, the harbor pilot does too. However, unlike the captain, a pilot does not receive any recognition or prestige for his job well done. Without the harbor pilot, captains would not be able to navigate their large vessels in and out of ports safely.…
