Legal and /or Ethical IssuesThe state and federal government implemented sex education in schools in order to provide students reliable and accurate information needed to make a responsible decision to stay healthy (SEICUS, 2014). The integration of sexuality in the school curriculum presents an ethical and legal issue in the academic community. Ethical issues are about questions of right and wrong; it cannot be settled by an appeal to facts alone; and it should be distinguished from values. Legal issues arise as a consequence of not providing a positive, safe, and encouraging learning environment to students. Courses on topics of human sexuality might make some students uncomfortable while also being necessary for

This can be difficult for educators of sexuality to choose how to handle the dilemma. An educator of sexuality may experience a dilemma in his or her career, and it is vital to understand one’s feelings and beliefs, and values before resolving it.     Their views on sexuality education for elementary children were very apathetic and largely opposing, whereas, when asked about sexuality education in middle school and high school, they were more neutral and favorable to the idea. The audience has yet to be able to envision the significance of why sexuality education is so important in society today. To persuade the audience we will inform them about the prevalence of teen pregnancy and STIs, and how they can be prevented by simply giving youth and adults the proper education they need to make responsible decisions. The audience is so against sexuality education for elementary, we presume, because they are focused on the idea of it causing those young children to consider having intercourse. We believe that the audience is targeting an idea, and distorting it. Through audience analysis, we determined that the audience themselves have not undergone comprehensive sexuality education, or experienced any actual sexuality education. Their inexperience in this field is likely clouding their judgement, as they may not have investigated the subject further. We will acquaint them with the information that comprehensive sexuality education focuses on age appropriate material. Our delivery choices include fear and positive appeals, and a great use of ethos, logos and pathos. Statistical data inflicts a fear appeal, and assists in the extension of logos.     Parents always seem to agree on education being a vital aspect of life. Knowledge of literature, math, and philosophy can help students go far beyond their expectations; however this process starts with awareness at a young age. One topic that is widely neglected in education is sex. Sexual education classes vary tremendously across the nation; while some schools insist on hiding the facts from children, others are much more open with discussion.     There are two broad techniques used to provide sex education, comprehensive sex education and abstinence based sex education (Mezey, 2011). The abstinence-based avenue explains to children that it is morally wrong to have sex prior to a heterosexual marriage, which leads to many problems such as higher rates of unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and a lack of knowledge on all subjects related to sex and healthy relationships (2011). This is especially true amongst LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities because they are left to find out sex and sexually related experiences through trial and error, and the Internet. Comprehensive sex education on the other hand, is when students are presented with every possible contraceptive option, their benefits and risks, statistical safety from preventing pregnancy and STDs/STIs (2011). Students also learn about what a healthy relationship is and how to effectively communicate their wants, needs, and limits in a sexual relationship. Comprehensive sex education is essential for students to grow into functioning adults, and thus participating members of a democracy (2011). Historically, sex education was not viewed as a necessary aspect for students until the 1960s and the demand for evidence-based education began in 1964. During this time period, Planned Parenthood established the Sexuality Information Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) to effectively education the younger population on sex and sexuality (2011).     We received a document prepared for the White House Task Force to Protect students from sexual assault, and in this report, there was evidence-based strategies for the primary prevention of sexual violence perpetration. These included policy suggestions and practices to improve safety, addressing social norms and behavior with messages from trusted and influential voices, as well as training student bystanders to intervene.     The government and schools must now step in and place more effective abstinence programs to ensure that students are bombarded by information on the negative effects of sex. As Timken High shows us, many states have pitiful curriculums that are currently set. It does not make any logical sense to keep inadequate courses in the schools if they do not work! I thought schools and the government were responsible for teaching students information that would help them succeed in modern society and make smart decisions. By keeping these ineffective programs, it sends an implied message that the educational bodies simply do not care. Instead of working to ensure the achievement of a goal, they are, in some respect, condoning premarital sex. Currently in the state of California, there is a required sexual education class that all high school students must take before graduating. The program in California as well as that in Ohio is relatively similar in many respects.     Ferfolja (2013) argues that it is from observing a teachers involvement, or lack of action, in the classroom that sexual diversities and its boundaries can be explored. She contends that many educators are reluctant to address or acknowledge the issues of sexual diversities in the classroom, for varying reasons (Ferfolja, 2013). This position is based on previous literature and research studies on the topic in question. Thein et al., (2013) confirm this argument, as they discuss the importance of addressing sexualities. However, they demonstrate how teachers are reluctant to employ this topic in a classroom situation. For example, in the study 73% of primary school teachers took a negative approach to teaching issues of sexuality as they believed it would not be appropriate or it was not a part of their job (Thein et al., 2013). This is not one of gallant knights, dragons, or any princesses, but one of wisdom and caution; rather it is of the birds and bees which is an eye opener for many adolescents, because of the misconceptions that is clears up about the word-that-must-not-be-said “sex”.
