A man by the name of George Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. From the start, Zimmerman claimed that he had acted in self-defense, and the Sanford police initially accepted that account. Calls by Martin's family for further investigation around the case, which resulted in second-degree murder and manslaughter charges against Zimmerman. The case went to trial in the summer of 2013, and in July of that year, the trial jury let Zimmerman free of all charges. Zimmerman chose not to ask for a pretrial Stand Your Ground hearing, and at trial he gave a self-defense claim.…
In the September 6 issue of the LA Times, reporter Sarah Parvini published an article about a former rapist registering as a sex offender, and his sentence. Ex-Stanford swimmer, Brock Turner, was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman behind a dumpster. The woman was completely unconscious and due to this, he was charged with three felony counts: assault with the intent to commit rape of an unconscious person, sexual penetration of an unconscious person and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person. Turner originally faced 14 years and jail but got 6 months instead. He was later released 3 months earlier than his 6-month sentence because of good behavior. This article contains conflict, drama, and oddity. This story contains a man vs.…
Orenthal James “O.J.” Simpson was accused of murdering his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goodman in 1995. Twenty years on, his case still remains controversial, but why? Simpson was a star athlete until 1979, where he pursued his dream of becoming an actor (Harris, 2008). O.J.’s alleged murder of his former wife and her friend thrust him into the spotlight, catching the public’s attention, as well as every news station in the U.S. One factor that makes this case so notorious is that there were many flaws during the investigative process, and a lot of them lead to the outcome of Simpson’s freedom from his charges. Many of these investigative errors could have been overcome with rigorous surveillance of officers on the…
Darryl Hunt is an African American born in 1965 in North Carolina. In 1984, he was convicted wrongfully of rape and murder of Deborah Sykes, a young white woman working as a newspaper editor. This paper researches oh his wrongful conviction in North Carolina. Darryl Hunt served nineteen and a half years before DNA evidence exonerated him. The charges leveled against him were because of inconsistencies in the initial stages of the case. An all-white bench convicted the then nineteen-year-old Hunt, even though there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime. A hotel employee made false claims that he saw Hunt enter the hotel bathroom, and later emerge with bloodstained towels. Other witnesses also fixed Hunt to the case. While sexual assault was central to the case, in 1994 DNA testing cleared him of involvement in the case, throwing the whole case into question.…
The program was made to restore communities, to develop or restore quality housing, to clean and secure streets, and to create opportunities for vibrant cultural and recreational facilities. Street also made children welfare one of his main focuses of his first terms, he sought to increase the funds for after school programs, and formed the Philadelphia children’s commission, a diverse group of government, civic, business, and faith based leadership. His job was to advise street on policies and programs that would have a positive impact in the lives of Philadelphia’s children. He also sought to fight truancy among school aged children. When he took office Philadelphia was one of the worst in the country and with much of his attention early on went into difficult decisions about the school. As time went on street had made Philadelphia a better place just on his first term. During his first term the murder rate hit an seven year high but the overall trend was significantly lower than in the 1970’s under frank Rizzo. On July 27, 2006 street lunched the adolescent violence reduction partnership as a way to prevent high risk youth (target age 10-15) from…
Anderson notes that two groups coexist simultaneously in the inner-cities which he labels as the “decent” and the “streets.” Although both groups suffer economic difficulties, they differ in values mainly instilled through parenting and the home environment. The decent group seeks to adopt mainstream middle-class values, such as a love, respect and law-abiding citizens nonviolently. Whereas the street-oriented group are mostly violent and feel disenfranchised. He states that the most common to feel disenfranchised are poor African Americans, especially the young.…

If it were up to me to improve this area, I would instill street barriers on some through streets, to create smaller communities and make it harder for would be offenders to get in and out. I would incorporate more street lighting and lighted pathways. I would get rid of a few of the liquor stores, having that many is such a close proximity to each other is only influencing more bad behavior. Reinforce building codes, incorporate community policing, and have a neighborhood graffiti and street trash clean up program along with neighborhood…
Sadly in today’s world there is an increased numbers of disturbed children. My generation is being influenced by many media sources that where not around in the past. Regulations on these mediums of communication are lacking. Many gangs, radical group and other misguided people are using these to recruit members and spread their ideas. The news is full of teenagers getting shot because they are affiliated to these organizations, without this influence these wouldn’t occur. We are growing more dangerous to not only others, but also ourselves. Willingly, we put ourselves into these situations that in the end could cost us our life.…
First, one of the most common living situations for less fortunate African Americans is in the projects. A project is a public living environment that is government owned. Although these buildings are government owned they are far from nice looking. Most of the buildings have no windows, are run down, dirty, and old. The government’s main goal is to maintain affordable housing not to make them the best looking homes in town. The projects aren’t a good environment for a child to be raised. Throughout these neighborhoods different gangs can be found. These gangs are built to defend the different areas in the projects. The gangs bring major violence to the area and are one of the main causes of death. At a young age children join these gangs and are raised to be violent. Many of them decorate the buildings they are living in with graffiti expressing their gang colors, symbols, or motto.…
Brad and Connie may have an action of assault against Ana. To obtain damages, Brad and Connie have to demonstrate that there was an intentional act or threat that directly places them in reasonable apprehension of imminent contact due to the direct acts of the defendant. In Rixon v Star City Casino Pty Ltd (2001) 53 NSWLR 98 (“Rixon”), assault requires proof of an intention to create in Brad’s and Connie’s apprehension of imminent physical interference but does not require an intention to actually cause physical interference to them. In this context, the act of throwing the ‘throw down’ onto the ground is intentional. Ana would argue that she had no intention to harm any when she threw the device. However,…
This often manifests itself as violence, low self-esteem, aggression, addiction, depression, and chronic disease later in life (Towns). In a child’s behavior in school mostly results in the traumatic events that the child has experiences in their community that they have no chose but to live their. Many children in Memphis start coping bye using drugs or worse. In late January, the Adverse Childhood Experiences center task force of Shelby County released data showing that filthy-five percent of Shelby County adults experienced a traumatic event during childhood, from abuse to neglect and substance abuse in the home (Towns). People in Memphis hear how awful it is to live hear and all the violence that takes place. Most of the violence is from tramatic events children have witnessed while growing up. Children watching their mom or dad do drugs affect them or witnessing a shooting of a family member. This is what children in Memphis go through on a daily basis and they think it’s susceptible to go right with the norm. They don’t have enough mature, caring adults around them to help mitigate their young defense systems on high alert (Charlier). Bahaviors, such as sleep disturbances anxious attachment and child is experiencing a persistent posttraumatic stress order…
In this essay I will explain at least three different proactive approaches to crime within communities. “A number of proactive strategies address violence in the community. Generally, these strategies focus on community interaction, family bonding, personal skill development, quality health care, youth activities, and so forth. The research may be applied to strategies designed to reduce violence in any community” (Meadows, (2010).…
Where I am from, it is becoming very violent (Rochester) there are a lot of kids killing kids just because. A young man was shot and killed December 3, 2013 by other kids, and now his child is left without a father because of the violence. So that is why I picked my topic and I’m going to cover information through explaining my 3 main points witch are, what are violent crimes, why children under 18 should get tried as an adult and what the consequences say about committing violent crimes.…
In order to promote non-violence in the community, you should, find out what is out there, get involved. Todays problem is the lack of communication that we have as a commmunity. Do my neighbors and I know each other reasonably well? How many people can answer that question? Nowadays, neighbors don’t speak to each other or they don’t even know eachother. We ( residents) need to identify and raise consciousness of violence, help one another own both the problem and the solutions, shifting the focus of action from the streets to the home and community, influence/motivate people to choose specific actions and behaviors that work and are positive, healthy and peaceful, encourage individuals to reduce violence, and create a culture of peace, hope and trust by living this way to teach by example. Also, work with police, school officials, and others to address larger issues for the community.…
