Tim O’Brien’s novel In the Lake of the Woods perpetually references the preceding atrocities that blemish American history. Within the chapters titled ‘Evidence’, scattered amongst the evidence accumulated for the fictional investigation into Kathy Wade’s disappearance, quotations from characters both authentic and fake exhibit the catalogue of concealed violence embedded in American history. Quotations reference the brutality in the battles of Lexington and Concord where the colonists were “as deplorable as the Indians for scalping and cutting the dead men’s auditory perceivers and nasal perceivers off” (262). Further references contained in the Evidence chapters regarding the Native Americans reiterate the words “exterminate” (260) and verbalize…
Throughout the context of “Bless Me Ultima,” it is evident that there are many motifs and examples of dichotomy. I believe that Anaya uses the previously mentioned elements of literature in order to provoke his readers’ thinking and help embody a struggle of understanding the world we live in. Motifs in this novel include: family, dreams, religion, education, and the list continues. For examples of dichotomy, the idea of good versus evil is the most vivid in this novel.…

In the novel, “The Pearl” there was many things symbolizing the pearl its self. The pearl was symbolized to ambition, then at the end of the story the pearl was represented as sinful. The character of the pearl changed because the pearl did harmful/hurtful things to Kino and his family. The symbol of the pearl was different from the beginning of the story till the end of the story. The pearl represented as aspiration in the beginning but was known to be dishonorable at the end of the story. As Kino appeared to have found the pearl himself, the pearl was a huge success for anyone who had it. The pearl had much value to it. But I think that the pearl was known to have troubles in the first place because once someone has a lot of money, people…

They forgot that they used to live in the same conditions as poor people and feel that the working class is beneath them and just seeing them makes the upper class shudder in this novel. In contrast, the author states how gloomy it is at the bottom tier. He states how people are working endlessly to clear the waste from the city and making sure that the city is able to function properly. They are the anchors or pillars of the city but, are living in horrible, filthy conditions. The upper class looks down on the lower class and do not acknowledge them unless they aren’t doing a job or being punished. They are underappreciated and Reeve wants to expose this issue in society. He wants readers to acknowledge the fact that the upper tier of society would not exist without the bottom tier supporting it. It would fall and would inevitably meet its demise. In addition, throughout the book Reeve continuously describes how much the bottom tier of people are needed and how a problem occurs if both classes of people are not able to work…

"White lips, pale face, breathing in the snowflakes." "It's too cold outside, for angels to fly." Not many people can sing these words with the same amount of heart and feeling as this one amazing, talented, English singer I have in mind. How many people can say they've helped write songs for one of the world's most popular bands today? How many people can say they left their homeland to go live on a stranger's couch in an unknown country to record their first album? How many people can say they've been nominated for "Song of the Year" at the Grammy Awards after having performed that same song with Sir Elton John? Practically no one, except for Edward Christopher Sheeran, or as most people would know him by, Ed Sheeran.…
What am I good at? What am I good at? The question swirled around my head as I stared at the lake it seemed so endless. It went on and on until it fitted into the sky. in that moment I felt like a body of water myself, I needed to find my path in life or just as the lake I would fade away I sat hopelessly feeling alone in the world I looked up to the star filled sky asking for some sort of sign or direction. In my peripheral I saw someone walking. I would love to see a homeless man. I watched as he unpacked his torn bag. He took out a small plastic sheet and ratty cover. A melancholy look covered his face. I felt so bad here I was complain about myself yet there are people in the world that truly have nothing and get ignored. I reached into my purse to find the sandwich I packed but neglected to eat. I pulled it out along with a piece of paper on it I wrote " for every dark night there's a brighter day" I walked over to the man smiled and gave him a sandwich along with the note. He opened the paper, suddenly his face resembled a new color his eyes became wide and watery in the place of his frown a smile appeared. He reached for my hand and said “thank you, you truly have a gift" my heart filled with a powerful feeling. I felt all the confusion from earlier that day fades.…
