This course, BEH225, has spent the past nine weeks introducing us to different human behaviors and specific types of mental disorders. When exploring theories and concepts associated with the psychology of the human mind, you quickly discover that genetics does play as big a role as does upbringing. I specifically enjoyed the section that explored different types of motivation an employee may or may not display. Another area that I found to be enlightening delved into the various psychological disorders that we may encounter during our life. I am going to apply what we have studied throughout this course to my interview with Dorothy. Certain aspects, methods, and attitudes are going to be explored, such as memory, learning, intelligence, personality, cognition, motivation, and testing of Dorothy and myself.…
Brian’s primary thinking style was achievement (the 11 o’clock position in the circumplex), where he scored a 40, in the 99th percentile. His backup style was affiliative (the 2 o’clock position on the circumplex) where he scored a 36, in the 83rd percentile. Both of these styles, though surprisingly high are represented in his work and life. Since high school he was a highly motivated person, and has set realistic goals and attained those goals. His work reflects the achievement style as well; the consulting company started when he graduated high school is an example, and his upwards career path also demonstrates his achievement style. The high score for the affiliative style indicates people-oriented personalities that emphasize teamwork and cooperation. However, this personality trait alone won’t necessarily accomplish anything because it will focus on the relationships and teamwork but not push to…
Times have changed from the mid-1900s. Career life is more difficult to settle into if one does not present with an education. Life as we know it is getting harder, “This generation is difficult but future generations will have an endless line of competition… this will only get more and more competitive as the years pass on(careerbuilder.com).” In this quote, it is brought to the readers’ attention that future generations will have it harder than previous generations. Remembering Gwen Noah, she too explained that her degree did not mean much to the employers she was hired by, but just one generation later, which her daughter where brought into, it was completely different. Noah encourages young people in today’s’ society to get a college education to pursue their long term goals. The Los Angeles Times throws the truth with a bang, and instead of covering it subtly, they have it out there for everyone to recognize the truth. The truth is, education is valued much more than it used to be valued years ago; it will continue to rise in value as long as the demands are met and people raise the…
Our motivations are what get us up in the morning and get us through the day. They are also more long term in that our specific motivators may determine the direction in which we take our lives and what we decide to do with our time. It can often be difficult to identify these motivators in ourselves. One way to see these motivators is to compare and contrast oneself to others. In Liz Murray’s memoir Breaking Night, she describes her hard and challenging life up until the moment that she was accepted into Harvard University. Although Liz’s life is quite different than mine, some aspects of ourselves and our motivations are the same, but of course there are also differences between them as well.…
In todays monopolistic society of boom and bust, it has become rapidly apparent that to suceed in any type of business there are a vast amount of characteristics that an indivudual must posses. We live in a world where aquiring technical skills and performing to a sufficient level is not enough to stand out. Definite aim, vision and purpose are three atributes out of a long list that have been deemed “Qualities that make ordinary people extraordinary” (Johnsson, M.C. and Hager, P , 2008). As a result, in this portfolio, I will conduct an indepth analysis of my own intrapersonal strengths and weaknesses in relation to those attributes that are likely to assist me in my pursual of success, and those attributes that are likely to assist me in my own career path as an investment banker. More specifically, I will be focussing on a relflection of my intrapersonal effectiveness using the NEO IPIP measure of personality and associate these to my life experience. In conjuction to this, I also identify how I intend to build such attributes in regards to my career goals, which will be done in…

Women commonly cite meaningful elements of the work they do as the most important factors in choosing a job. When an individual is able to find purpose and the perfect fit they are able to turn their inspiration in to determination, which is a necessity to become successful. In chapter One they give five factors that are tested in order to find that personality they are seeking, Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism. “Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground”. This quote by Theodore Roosevelt has been the source of inspiration for each one of us in our group. After reading the case: “Life stories of Recent MBAs: Motivations”, we were motivated to work harder, serve the community and learn to handle more complex situations rather than choosing the easy way out. Among the six characters described in the case, the character that had the maximum impact on all of us was Monica Chi.…
