The two boys relationship was very puzzling to outside viewers, since the boys had little to nothing in common (Braatz). Loeb was good looking, well liked, and very smart even though he chose not to show it. On the other hand, Leopold was not very good looking, shy, awkward, and tended to over achieve in his studies (Adcock). Although Leopold and Loeb did come from similar backgrounds of wealthy families, they were both pushed to do extremely well in school at a young age, and they both entered college at a very young age (Rosenberg). This caused them to feel insecure about certain things and were very isolated from others. These feelings played a role in establishing their relationship.
