Jean Valjean was an honest man who committed a minor crime of stealing a loaf of bread to feed his family. His criminal records led him to have a hard time finding employment, lodgings and place in the society. Despite of these hardships he met the Bishop of Digne who showed kindness to him. Valjean felt worthless and hopeless that’s why he stole the Bishop’s silverware but the Bishop didn’t tell it to the police instead he gave the silverwares to Valjean. When he leaved the Bishop’s place he decided to change his identity and start a new life. With his new identity he took the chance to help the less fortunate by doing good deeds like giving a good standard of pay for the common people. He has this employee named Cosette who’s working hard for her daughter Cosette. Everytime that the guardians sent a letter to her saying that Cosette needs money right away Fantine will make money and send it to Cosette.Fantine will do everything just to sustain the needs of her daughter but unfortunately she died and Valjean took the urge to take care of Cosette. Javert is also recognized in the story, he is a well intentioned officer of the law but he is rigid in his thinking. His ability can be based on the higher ruling class who believed that they have the divine authority to govern the society. Javert took his own life at the end of the story because he realized that despite of what he did wrong to Valjean he still choose not to kill him instead Valjean forgive him and help him. This simply shows that Valjean is really a good person that he also considers the situation of others instead of his own.
The story signifies that there are people who are willing to help in times of need and free us in harmful situation.
