For centuries, stories have been told amongst people all around the world. As time went on, people have searched for ways to help better memorize these stories. Stories were often written down by those who could write, which at the time was a small percent of people in the world. For those that couldn't write, they had no choice but to pass stories on verbally. These people soon realized that over time, stories are not always told properly, or are purposely changed. Stories told by song are not only kept the same, but they are also easier to remember. For example, during slavery, slaves depended on songs to lead them to freedom. One song was "Follow the Drinkin' Gourd." This song gave specific instructions on how to follow the stars, evade…

Songs are exactly like poetry, maybe even a little better (Griggs, Does poetry still matter?). The song “Car Radio” by Twenty One Pilots is more poetic and artistic than the poem “Acquainted with the Night” by Robert Frost because of the use of repetition, rhyme and symbolism.…

A great deal of literary works are written with the purpose of telling story. A narrative poem simply tells a story from the perspective of a narrator who does not reveal their personal thoughts or feelings. A prime example of a narrative poem would be Out, out, by Robert Frost in which the story of a little boy losing his life with a detached narrator.…

Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann have both directed a film version of Romeo and Juliet very well, but a movie can not capture everything from the book. So, which movie portrayed the book better? There are aspects of both movies that portray the book better. For example, there could one movie could show the character's personality better than the other one or one movie can show the city of Verona better than the other movie did. Small details of a scene could make a scene in one movie a lot better than on the other. Even the smallest of things like the way the characters are dressed could impact the entire scene. Hannah Kent, in Burial Rites and Billie August in Les Miserables explore a variety of injustices as a product of prejudice by revealing the flaws of their Nineteenth Century social system. Although Kent released her novel in the 21st century, she thoroughly presents Nineteenth Century Iceland in all its formidable culture of prejudice and hardship to the same extent that August explores Nineteenth Century France in Les Miserables. Though both authors propose that one’s preconception of another rests in the position of their social class, August presents that as one’s social class changes, the prejudice changes towards them changes. This is different to Kent as she entices the readers to see the nature of men and their prejudice towards women…

Like James Baldwin said “only an artist can tell and only an artist have told, since we have heard of man, what it is like for anyone that gets this planet, to survive it. What it is like to die, or to have somebody die, what it is like to fear death, what is it like to fear, what it is like to love, what it is like to be glad.” Music expresses the pain, suffering, love and all sorts of emotions that we cannot express but just normal verbal means. Artists talk about the depressing topics that we are afraid to talk about and express our inner emotions for us and give us a sense of relief that someone else can relate to us. In the revelation of the narrator at the end of the story he realized that of all the things he been through that there is still light at the end of the tunnel because he still have his brother, they are surviving and living.…

Othello, a tragic play where a man named Othello meets his downfall when he allows another man to play mind games with him. Since this plays tragic ending is quite famous, a movie called "Othello" was created in 1995. The director of this play wanted to not only keep the movie as close to the play as possible, but also have a unique way of getting the plays message across to the audience. The difference we see between the play and the movie is how they interpreted the character Iago and Othello by the way the director uses movie tools and Othello's ethnicity.…

I see the Song of Songs as an allegory. This is supposed to be a poem that is between lovers. A man and a woman are expressing appreciation for each other’s bodies in frank detail. It is intended to celebrate human sexuality, love and human life itself. The lovers repeatedly describe parts of each other’s bodies over and over. They make comparisons to animals or features of landscape. The intention of this is to have the reader gain the power of physical desire while appreciating the harmony of the human body and love.…
