INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Cosplay is the short term used for the phrase “costume play”. It is an activity which requires every participant to wear costumesand accessories to represent a specific character or idea from a work of fiction. In cosplaying, it is not unusual to see genders switched because some are known for choosing characters to be portrayed based on the attractiveness of their costume and even on how revealing it was. The characters chosen to be cosplayed are often based on manga’s, anime, comic books, video games and even films. (“Definition of Cosplay”, n.d.)
Cosplay did not really start in Japan as most us knew and it is not an original concept of the Japanese. It is true that the actual word “cosplay” was coined by a Japanese reporter named Nov Takahashi when he was assigned to report the happenings on the 1984 WorldCon in Los Angeles, California. Japanese involvement in the creation of the hobby is just because of Nov Takahashi’s coinage on the word “cosplay” which he uses to describe what he see and observe at the WorldCon.
It is said that the first documented hall costume was worn by Forry Ackerman during the 1939 WorldCon in New York. His first costume design was an original “space military” style uniform. The early WorlCons and other small sci-fi conventions were primarily attended by young men only. Women are either not admitted or often seen at sci-fi
