Music Teaching Guide:
Posture and Relaxation

I TARGET GRADE LEVEL: Grade 3

II MODULES 1: Foundations of Basic Vocal Performance

III TIME ALLOTMENT: 15 minutes per session (12 sessions)

IV PERFORMANCE STANDARD

⦁ Stands correctly with proper singing stance/posture
⦁ Makes the body relaxed
⦁ Shows proper breathing regulation

V COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES

⦁ incorporates proper singing stance to properly perform breathing regulation and abdominal support

⦁ demonstrates a relaxed body to lessen the tension through body-stretching and simple body exercises

VI PRIOR SKILLS & ASSESSMENT

Interview the student regarding prior vocal lessons, if had one. Ask the student if engages in any physical exercises. Ask the student about his/her health condition; if ever he/she has scoliosis, asthma, etc so as to refrain the student from engaging in one of the lesson’s objective which is simple body stretching. Evaluate and identify the student’s vocal range.

VII CONTENT/TOPIC

⦁ Proper Singing Posture:

1. The chin should be about parallel to the floor.
2. Shoulders should be held back and down, with chest held high, but not in a strained position.
3. Abdomen should be flat and firm, held in an expandable position.
4. Hands should be relaxed and still at the sides.
5. Knees should be flexibly loose, and never locked.
6. Feet should be slightly apart, one slightly in front of the other. The weight of the body is slightly forward.

⦁ Simple body stretching or exercises in singing: walking, jogging, brisk walking, sitting while reaching your toes, and squatting

⦁ Breathing regulation or control along with abdominal/diaphragm support

VIII.ACTIVITIES & STEPS/ PROCEDURE

⦁ Introduce to the student the proper singing posture. It is important to give your self as an example. Here are some activities:

1. Make your student stand up against a wall, placing heels, calves, buttocks, shoulders, and head touch the wall.
