King spent eight days in his cell. During that time he composed his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." The letter was ostensibly conceived in response to a letter that had recently run in a local newspaper, which had claimed that the protests were "unwise and untimely"; however, King also quite deliberately wrote his letter for a national audience. The letter reveals King's strength as a rhetorician and his breadth of learning. It alludes to numerous secular thinkers, as well as to the Bible. It is passionate and controlled, and was subsequently appropriated by many writing textbooks as a model of persuasive writing. At the time, it gave a singular, eloquent voice to a massive, jumbled movement.…

It saddened me to hear that a few months ago a bill to assist veterans in finding jobs, in which their military skills would be utilized, was voted down in Senate. Sponsored by Senator Patty Murray, "Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012", was thought to be a sure pass. The vote was 58-40; only 2 more votes were needed to pass this bill. This bill was effectively killed on the Senate floor by the Republican party on September, 19, 2012. The "Veterans Jobs Corps Act of 2012" was meant to tackle feelings of uselessness by giving our overqualified heroes an opportunity to work in fields appropriate to their abilities (For example police, firemen, armed security, etc.).…

I'm sitting here, staring at the sun shining through the blinds here in my study. It's 7 A.M. and James is still lying in bed. So, I have this time to finally write to you, my dear friend. My heart is growing heavy as I ponder all of the political issues that are among us. One issue that was very pressing on my heart earlier in the year, was when we were at heads whether to go with the Virginia Plan or the New Jersey Plan. I’m not sure where you stand, but I’m in complete favor of the New Jersey Plan. The strongest reason I’m in support of this plan is because I fear the national government having too much control. Having the states remain the most powerful government will lead to a stronger United States. I can’t say that I’m completely unappeased to the Great Compromise. I actually feel like it was the best way we could handle two strongly apposed sides.…
