The Pacific ocean has the nickname “peaceful sea”. The Pacific ocean is the largest ocean in the world covering more than 30% of the earth's surface, which is more than 60 million square miles. The floor of the ocean is very similar to the floor above the water’s surface in that it has mountains,
valleys, plains, plateaus, islands, ridges, and sometimes volcanoes. The deepest part of the ocean is called the Mariana Trench which is 10,994 meters down(36,070ft). The average temperature is about 62 degrees fahrenheit.
There are several mind blowing and deadly creatures in the ocean. Ranging from a 4 inch shrimp to a 600 pound octopus. Actually, there are more than 2,000 types of shrimp. Female sharks can grow up to 15-21 feet long to where males can only grow up to 11-13 feet. Many fish can change their sex during their lifetime and some rare, deep-living fish are even born with male and female organs. Octopus are invertebrates which means they are boneless and they lose their shape when they are out of water. Octopus heads are called mantle with 8 arms called tentacles.
There are also several astonishing plants that live in the ocean, most are mainly at the surface or in shallow water. Kelp is a major plant in the ocean that grows in cold coastal waters. Kelp is the largest marine plant in the world and can reach up to 250 feet long. It is also the fastest growing plant in the world. Red algae is another major plant species in the ocean. Red algae grows in warm coastal waters. This plant species is over 500 million years old. Red algae is also harvested for food, mainly in Asia, and it has a high source of protein and many vitamins.
Most people think that coral reef is a plant but it is actually an animal organism. However coral reef get most of their colors from algae that live on the coral.
