Letter To Financial Aid Committee
January 12, 2016
American River College

Dear Financial Aid Committee;
My name is Jamilet Lazo and I have been attending American River College since Fall 2013, throughout my journey in attempting to reach my goal towards becoming an educated student and woman. I have stumbled upon a few road blocks towards being a successful student. This past semester has helped me realize I must get back on track and be the excellent I know I could possibly be. Although The past year has been a life changing experience that may have affected my education I have the knowledge to get back on track and come back even better.
There was an extreme change that affected my ability to be the good student I could’ve been, starting off by becoming a first-time mom.

    After having my son, my body was still trying cope itself to having to care for a “c-section” and a newborn even though it was like at least a month or two after being at the hospital. I just really wasn’t applying myself like I should’ve been for the semester. I wasn’t ready to come back to school, but I didn’t want to get behind anymore than I was already. Also, in April, after my recovery weeks, I started a new job at Target and I would get off, go home, and take care of my son and just would be too exhausted to attend class the next day. Therefore, for that being done I was buried even more for being on the edge of academic…

    I am really thankful for the generous award letter, but I still can not afford to attend University. On the award letter sent to me on June 22, 2007, it suggested that my parents should take a $9500 Federal Plus Loan. My parents have $480,000 mortgages that they are struggling to pay—they pay $2,710.53 for the first mortgage and $1,188.08 for the second mortgage (monthly). Yet, they make only $4200 from their jobs. They also need pay for utilities and foods—they are scrambling every dollar to pay these bills. Therefore, I can not see myself asking my parents to take another loan on my behalf. My family simply can not financially support my college education.…

    I would like to begin by saying that I am honored to be a nominee for membership into the 2013 Senior Honor Society of York College of Pennsylvania. I take passion in my academic studies and my community involvement. The opportunity to be recognized for the impact I have made on my college and local community is truly flattering. After spending my first two years at Millersville University, I began my studies at York College in my third year of college as a junior. Living in Spring Grove, I made the decision to live at home, work a part-time job, and commute to York College. These factors are all things that could have impacted my campus-life involvement, but I was determined to not let these factors impact my college experience. I jumped head first into the York College Community and was accepted with open arms into whatever groups I wanted to become affiliated with on campus.…

    I am appealing my financial aid suspension because of difficulty completing my courses. Last semester was my third at KU. I believe that my lack of focus due to having an unannounced 4 year old daughter I just discovered in October of last year and my grandma died soon after. My past records show I have met the Satisfactory Academic Progress I just had a bad semester due to personal issues. Personal issues of this sort are very rare that’s why I feel I should be given another shot at my financial aid. I feel it’s a privilege to even have it since everyone is not able to get it. Without financial aid I would not be able finish my career of running or my educational success at The University of Kansas.…

    As a single mother of four children, it is my responsibility to be a positive role model for them. One of my roles is instilling how vital a college education is towards their future, which was problematic since I lacked one myself. Therefore, because children learn through example, making the decision to acquire a college degree was a necessary choice. The challenge began when it was time to decide what field of study to target, what type of school to attend, and where I envisioned myself in the future.…

    Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…

    Mary’s University become the first member of my family to graduate from college in four years. I became a dedicated student leader committed to social justice and being a voice for those who were experiencing what my family had experienced. The social, cultural, and economic barriers that I have faced in my time in the U.S. have prompted me to become a global citizen who is committed to International service and adamant about the importance of diversity in any community I am in. I plan to contribute to the campus community in a unique and positive manner that enhances campus diversity by becoming involved outside the classroom. I owe it to the aspects of my identity to join the International Club, Black Life, and getting involved with the Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Services. I look to be a catalyst for the work that is done on the University of California, San Diego…
