Mayor Rhett Taylor
Village of Grayslake
10 South Seymour Avenue
Grayslake, Illinois 60030 Re: Lowering Property Taxes Dear Mayor Taylor: I am writing this letter to propose the lowering of property taxes in Grayslake. I come from a family with four kids, all of which are planning to go through or have gone through District 46 and District
127 education. We love everything about Grayslake except one thing: the property taxes are ridiculously high. I want to launch a proposal to you to lower the property taxes for residents in
Grayslake because they cause a burden on the real estate market, therefore preventing Grayslake from expansion and economic growth. Last year in May, the districts determined the property taxes for the following year . As you are aware, the taxes come out to be $10,980.13, and that is based off of a house worth $200,000 (Sysngary 1). As of December 3, 2014, the average property listing price was $219,000(Living in Grayslake 2), which is over the 200,000 figure that is used to calculate tax, therefore the property taxes are even higher for most than the number listed above. The increasingly high property taxes put an extreme burden on the real estate market. I can speak from experience. My family moved from one subdivision in Grayslake to another in Grayslake. We stayed in the same school districts, nothing changed. When we were trying to sell my house, we got nothing but positive feedback. People loved the our home and the area it was in, but when it came down to it, the number one disincentive was the property taxes. This may come off as a biased approach, but I have the facts to back me up. Grayslake is ranked on the list of worst taxes in Illinois and “property taxes in Illinois are the second highest in the nation”
(Sperling 1). According to the urban Institute, “Hawaii homeowners pay one eighth of what Illinois homeowners pay”. To
