Letters To The Editors.
What is behind Photoshop? I was shocked after reading this article ‘We Are As Beautiful As Them‘ on 28/4/13. This article was a great idea about photoshop. I had been wondering the same thing. Magazines shouldn’t be doing to much photoshop to models but keeping their imperfections because no one is perfect. Men and women need to know that the photos has been retouched. People should realize that even these ‘perfect’ actresses and models are far from perfect. Editors just redefine their looks and create the image with their own version of perfection. Editors should keep the model’s both imperfections and perfections. San, Melbourne, Via Email MIranda Kerr Stops Modeling I was like a thunderbolt when I red this article ‘Could There Be A Next Miranda Kerr?’ on 1st April. I can’t believe that Miranda got kicked out of DJ company and VS. She was a really fantastic model. Miranda Kerr should continue to model for David Jones and Victoria’s Secret. Maybe both companies still need her because she has a sexy and attractive look and body. Australian international supermodel Miranda Kerr has been dropped out from David Jones company and Victoria’s Secret because of and ended contract that she signed to model for both companies for five years. Kendall Jenner, Suki Waterhouse, Laura James and Jessica Gomes was selected to be ‘The Next Miranda Kerr’. Jessica Gomes had already replaced Miranda in DJ company and could she also replace Miranda in Victoria’s Secret too? If Miranda wants to move on and keep being a model then thats her choice, but if she doesn't that is her own decision. San, Melbourne, Via Email

Animals Being Killed For Clothes?! I got a FRIGHT from reading this article ‘Murder For Fashion?’ Animals being killed for fur and clothes!? People shouldn’t be taking and killing to much animals for their fur because it’s risking their lives. Animals are killed or skinned alive for their fur or skins. Fashion in China pretty much kill baby seals

Throughout reading articles published in your newspaper in the past few years and also in the broader media in Australia, I have become quite irritated that Australian Indigenous communities are still being treated with disrespect and wrongness by our government. All human beings should be treated as equals and have equal rights to the basic necessities such as quality health care. However we still fail to give our Indigenous communities the respect that they deserve, after all the heart ache we the non-indigenous Australians have caused them in the past it is only fair that we treat them with the utmost respect.…

Because many people are vulnerable about their appearances, it is best to cease use of photoshop on a model's body to keep from prompting people to self-harm themselves due to wrongful thinking that "they" can never be as beautiful as the model on the magazine. People are people, there is no need to cover up "horrendous" body fat or whatsoever. We all have body fat and it's all natural, so why use photoshop on people? What truly matters is the inside of a person. On the other hand, if image manipulation is used on something other than people, it is perfectly fine because a person is not criticized for their…

Even if a couple companies claimed to be treating the animals’ right, there would be no way to know for sure and it would be far too expensive to have people surveilling all the fur companies in the world. Fortunately, there has been an increasing number in those who are opposed to the fur trade. Thousands of animal rights activists have put multiple fur trading companies out of business due to their cruelty towards the animals. Many super models including Christy Turlington and Elle Macpherson have chosen to become fur free. Some fashion designers such as Stella McCartney have also chosen to go fur free, Stella not only avoids fur products but all animal products. Each year we are closer to nearly exterminating the fur trade but it has continued thus far. Why should millions of animals have to die for one person to be slightly warmer than they would be with a regular coat or jacket? Why should living things be tortured for money, it doesn’t sound right in any way whatsoever nor should it. We need to do all we can to help animals as well as those paid so poorly to do the “dirty work.” We need to do all we can to make sure we avoid purchasing anything that has the word fur on the tag unless the word “fake” is in front of…

Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of how this use of photoshopping is negatively affecting young women. Whereas some are convinced that girls put the pressure on themselves, others maintain that the media is to be held responsible for exerting pressure to have the “perfect body.” It is sometimes said that Kim Kardashian, a well-known celebrity, is a role model for these young women and girls. Recently, Kim Kardashian posted a naked selfie, edited using Instagram, claiming that this act was self-empowering. Kardashian herself writes for her online blog, "I am empowered by my body . . . I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world” (qtd. in Filipovic). Basically, what Kardashian was trying to say here is that girls and women should love their body no matter what they look like. Kardashian and other celebrities like her are speaking out for body image and are trying to help girls realize they don't have to have a flawless body; however, these flawless bodies, like Kardashian’s, are the types of bodies that are seen in advertisements for the fashion…

I am writing this letter to Jeremy Rifkin’s article “A Change Of Heart About Animals.” I disagree. I don’t think we can change the way we treat animals. I think we should just let them be and have them live their own habit. If we change the way we treat animals, than they would be like humans and not themselves. They wouldn’t be just normal animals. I feel that animals should be in their own habit and not become more like humans.…

I would personally like to thank Jeremy Rifkin for his earth-shaking findings published in “A Change of Heart about Animals”. Without Rifkin’s article, I never would have realized that animals can experience pain, suffering, and affection (2). The global community is truly indebted to Rifkin for proving, for the first time ever, that animals are actually living, breathing creatures—a truly groundbreaking scientific achievement, no doubt. The truth is: Rifkin has proven nothing new and merely demonstrated the barefaced hypocrisy of the animal rights movement.…

We rarely see real women portrayed in the media. This is why most women have low self-esteem and are unhappy with their looks. Women yearn to look like the women on the covers of magazines, and on the front pages of fashion websites with, as stated by former Cosmopolitan editor Leah Hardy, “ 22-inch waists, but they also had breasts and great skin. They had teeny tiny ankles and thin thighs, but they still had luscious hair and full cheeks” (Hardy, 2010). These women don't exist, but we still strive to look like them. Photoshopping in the media is not only altering images, but it is also altering the definition of beauty in our minds. It gives people the idea that if they don’t look like the people on those covers, they wont fit in with society. Magazines and social media sites need to realize that they are planting fake ideals, almost impossible to achieve, into young girls’ impressionable minds, and they are changing their concept of what really is beautiful and…

    Fur Trade Ethics

Each year, billions of animals are brutally slaughtered, solely for the use of their fur for human needs. The fur industry is a completely unnecessary, inhumane, and cruel practice. Although some of our group members had prior knowledge on the industry, the group was shocked after researching and educating ourselves further on the horrors of the fur trade. Killing animals for fur is unnecessary, considering all the cruelty free options that we available today in our modern society. Besides the ethics side of the argument, the fur industry is an environmentally destructive process. Similar to other forms of factory farming, the fur industry is a threat to the earths natural resources. People who wear fur claim that they do so for reasons such…

The photo alteration industry has frequently been accused of provoking or inciting a distorted self-image, most explicitly in younger people, who are subject to being more vulnerable. Manipulation of photos is most usually affiliated with the culture of ‘glamour’ photography. This is obviously a concerning element as many people look up to celebrities in search of emulating the 'ideal figure', which in fact is physically unachievable. This results in unrealistic expectations being thrust upon the vulnerable general public, who subject themselves most usually to eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia. When photos are distorted in this way they have a strong sense of verisimilitude, which only reinforces the idea of ‘perfection’. The advertisers, through the photographs, are not aiming to be artistic. They are aiming to change the image of beauty in the minds of their consumers. Statistics show that 73% of teenage girls who abuse diet pills and 79% of teenage girls who self-purge frequently read women’s fitness and health…

I am writing this letter in regards to the recent article that was printed in the Sydney Morning Herald earlier this week criticizing the study of Shakespeare in school and how it should be removed from the year 9 syllabuses. One of Shakespeare’s most famous works is the play of Romeo and Juliet which is also one of the world’s best-known love stories. A play such as Romeo and Juliet incorporates profound themes of human nature, father and daughter relationships and the inevitability of fate. In addition, exposing students to a multitude of literary techniques, challenges students with difficult language and style, expresses a profound knowledge of human behavior and offers insight into the world around us. Simply stated, I believe students should study Romeo and Juliet in school because of the incredible value within the play.…

In my opinion the use of photoshop in pictures can have a major affect on a variety of things. Such as self of steem in young adolecence and the pressure to be "perfect", But having said that photoshop isn't the only thing playing the public eye. Everywhere we turn there is often a picture displaying a beautiful skinny woman with a perfect complextion, and wether we like it or not for a split second you think to your self "why am I not like that". Often this can be a trigger point for adolecence for self esteem issues or leading to unhealthy acts such as eating disorders in the strive to also become "perfect". I myself have been influnced by these false pictures and felt the pressure of looking like that perfect woman. Not only to it leading…

Photoshop and other photo editing softwares have changed the face (and bodily proportions) of media communications and marketing. The power to wipe away so-called “imperfections” of models has led to a culture that glorifies unrealistic standards and causes the consumers of Photoshopped images to compare themselves and their bodies to an ideal that is only reachable with strategic clicks and expert airbrushing.…

China supplies more than half of the finished fur products imported to Australia. There are no penalties for abusing animals on fur farms in China. In an undercover investigation performed by PETA activists, a sickening discovery was made. The methods of obtaining the animal skins were far worse than anyone had imagined. On these fur farms, many animals are still alive and struggling when the workers flip them onto their backs or hang them by their legs to skin them. If an animal is struggling and making it hard to obtain the skin, the worker may stomp on the head or neck of the animal to allow a clean cut. In other cases, it was much worse. Before the animals were skinned alive, they were pulled from their cages and thrown to the ground. The workers at the farm then continued to stomp on and beat the animal, causing broken bones and convulsions, but not always immediate death. The skin was then ripped off the animal and the bloody, half alive carcass was thrown onto a growing pile of bodies. Some of the bodies were still alive, breathing in…

Forty to fifty million animals are killed each year for their fur ("Speak out for Species Web"). Rabbits, raccoons, dogs, foxes, chinchillas and many more are killed in ways that are repulsive and heartbreaking. The animals are killed in ways that will not cause a mess so their fur is clean and the seller will get the most money possible.…

In her article “Does ‘Photoshopping’ Images Hurt Teens?,” Kaitlin Menza wrote that “altered photos are false advertisements that warp our body image.” Even though we know that these images are not real, they can still make us feel down about ourselves. We should not be self conscious because of the way a model looks because that is not an accurate representation of the way the body looks.…
