In the beginning of the novel, Lev is having his tithing party because he turned thirteen and he is going to sacrifice himself to God. Lev was born to be given back to God for the family. Everyone was excited for him, including himself. Lev's brother, Marcus, asked him "What do you think of all this?" Lev says, "It's great." It is amazing. Lev says, "I'm having the time of my life." All of them get caught on purpose and go to Happy Jacks Harvest Camp. Lev is wearing his tithing whites, while the others don't because they are the terribles. He has to wear the whites because he was originally being tithed. When Lev, Mai, and Blaine were in Alaska they had an explosive compound transfused to replace their blood. They planned to blow up the camp because it is inhumane what they are doing to the people there. Blaine went off by accident then Mai, but Lev didn't. "He wants to. He needs to. But he can't."
