Currently, my aspirations lie towards Pediatrics. With frequent visits to the doctor’s office due to illnesses and infections from my vesicoureteral reflux as a child, the health care setting became a place I was comfortable with. Furthermore, my experiences volunteering at Kids Come First Community Health Clinic and tutoring disadvantaged children through Project Literacy have confirmed my desire to work with this population. The early primary care clinical experiences and required primary care clerkships will help confirm that Pediatrics is the ideal fit for me.…

In this regard, the area of major aspect for me is the racial stigma and discrimination encountered by patient. A number of patients may fear of discrimination due to ethnic differences and possess the perception of neglecting due to their social status. For this, the duty of the RN is to assure the patient that the care is not bounded by social factors. I will observe the problems of the patients reflecting their religious perceptions and cultural beliefs. By gaining knowledge and collecting sufficient data, I will disseminate care services that will be inclusive with the respect of my patient’s religious and cultural beliefs alongside ensuring their dignity. Another aspect will be the enhancement of my communication skills. I will engage myself in a healthy conversation with such patient as listening to them will not only builds trust but will assist me in making patients certain about the positive outcomes form a proposed…

Earlier this semester I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Kahn, and asked him some questions. I was interested in asking him questions because I had admired him as a teacher, and a person throughout the semester. I had never met someone who appeared as intelligent as Dr. Kahn, but was also down to earth. In class he spoke in a way that was easy to understand, he also accepted, and answered our questions no matter how ignorant, or insignificant.…

Heredity, culture, and environment can all influence patient behavior in the medical office. Starting with heredity, the traits that we inherit from our parents and grandparents are based on genes. We inherit genes from our family members; therefore, we may also inherit specific diseases that they may have had, like heart disease for example. If a mother has heart disease, this tendency can be transferred to a child through gene composition. Furthermore, from a Hispanic point of view, unlike Native Americans, they do not quite agree with taking medication every time they feel sick. “The prevention of illness is an accepted practice that is accomplished with prayer, the wearing of religious medals, or amulets, and keeping relics in the home” (Cultural Diversity, 2012). This citation explains the Hispanic point of view toward health care.…

The presence of cultural competence in the health care system and what it means for the health of our diverse population, is something that should be part of the schooling for healthcare providers. Cultural Competence in the health care system is described as the ability to tend to the needs of patients through understanding their linguistic and cultural differences. Our vast, diverse population in the United States makes cultural competence in health care imperative. Without it, we cannot provide other cultures with the effective and comforting health care they need and deserve. In order for culturally diverse people to receive the proper health care they need, health care practitioners must be well versed in other cultures. Their ability…

My goals for residency are simple – to continuously learn in order to educate and heal. Although I have been involved in the community in various ways for many years, I am truly excited to start giving back to society from a different perspective – that of a physician, of a person’s first stop in their most vulnerable of times. Family Medicine is a broad field that will challenge me in many ways, but I am ready to enhance my knowledge in a program that fosters learning through a supportive, team approach where patients and their futures are the greatest concerns.…

The best way for the medical profession to overcome disparities in healthcare is to enhance treatment outcomes by improving equality of care. As a child, I relied on government funded healthcare programs for medical treatment. Currently, I am insured through my employer’s health insurance policy and am able to enjoy the luxuries of having private insurance. Experiencing treatment from both channels I realized a gap in the quality of care. The medical profession can fill this gap by focusing on teaching compassion and equality in the classroom. Muhammad Ali once said, “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief and once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” If medical programs continue to emphasize the…
