Workplace Discrimination In Arizona many businesses have fired employees because of their sexuality. LGBT employees fear that they would be discriminated at their workplace and lose their jobs. As quoted, “For to often, LGBT workers are not hired, not promoted, or in …show more content…
worst cases, fired from their jobs solely due to their sexual orientation and gender identity, and not based on employment qualifications” (Mitchun2). People should not be judged by their sexual orientation, they should be judged by their performance at work. In addition, Sam Hall is an employee at Cocompany who was discriminated for being gay. Sam’s coworkers would break into his locker, pop his tires, bully him, and tell him they would care less if he was dead.
Secondly, it is risky for LGBT people to show how they feel towards people at work. As quoted, “The law in most states allows businesses to choose to fire or refuse to hire anyone for any reason – so long as the refusal isn’t on the basis of a ‘protected category,’ like race of sex. Arizona businesses are legally allowed to discriminate against gay and lesbian people because sexual orientation is not a protected category under state law” (Winkler4). Employees should not have to hide their intimate feeling they have for certain sexes just for the threat of being fired. Furthermore, Mia Macey was training to be a detective and was fully qualified for the job, but because she was transgender she was not hired and an unexperienced employee was hired to take Mia’s place. Many businesses fired employees because of their sexuality.
Personal Complications
Many LGBT people go through various problems from being discriminated at work.
These problems can be Psychological problems to health problems. As quoted, “Research shows that LGBT employees who have experienced employment discrimination, or fear discrimination, higher levels of psychological distress and health- related problems, less job satisfaction and higher hates of absenteeism, and are more likely to contemplate quitting than LGBT employees who have not experienced or do not fear discrimination” (BusinessNewsDailyStaff 11). LGBT employees shouldn’t have to go through all of these personal problems, they should be able to live their lives like any other employee would. In addition, a teacher was fired because she is a lesbian and is planning to have a child with her partner. After she was fired she was in much pain and had a hard time paying off her fees. Secondly, Lgbt employees hide their identities because they are afraid they would have a hard time getting a good job. As described, “ Because of discrimination, and fear of discrimination many LGBT employees hide theirs identities, are paid less and have fewer employment opportunities than non- LGBT employees” (BusinessNewsDailyStaff 10). LGBT employees should be able to express themselves for who they are, they shouldn’t have to be scared to tell anyone what sex they prefare. LGBT employees work as well as any other employee. his employer began to give him demands that were unreasonable. Kyler felt emarrased because people didn’t appreciate him for who he is. Kyler was impacted with postermatic stress because of the harrasment he encountered at his work place. These people suffer through various problems, because of the discrimination. Many peole have suffered severe health problems and psychological problems.
No Protection
Arizona has written many laws that would protect people for there personal flaws, but LGBT people don’t fall under these categories.
As stated, “While Arizona Revised Statute 41-1463 covers workplace discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, age, or national origin, it does not afford individuals of LGBT affiliation protections” (Allen 2). I believe there should be a law created to protect LGBT people because these people work as hard as any other person and they don’t deserve to be mistreated. If laws could be created to protect people for their race, color, age, and other personal beliefs why cant a law be created to protect LGBT people from discrimination? Many employees who like the same sex have suffered because they have nothing to protect them. Secondly, many gay and lesbian employees have been refused in a job because many employees become uncomortable with a LGBT employee. As quoted, “Even without hateful Beau crow laws, businesses in most parts of the country can stil refuse to hire someone because of that persons private personal sexual choices” (Winkler7). Employers shouldn’t have to worry about the employees personal sexual choices. This kind of information should remain private. In addition,Kimya Afi Ayodele is a female who was being interviewed to become a manager. Kimya explains how her emploer began to ask her personal questions of her sex choice. The employer discovered that Kimya is a lesbian but still gave her the job of being a manager hoping
that nothing would go wrong. Everything went well for Kimya untilshe decided todate of of the female employees. After this everyone began to send her hateful letters, and voicemails. Kimyas Employer then fires her because of the problems that were circulating at work. Lesbians, Gay Men, Bisexual, and Trigender people are treated poorly and unfair. Many laws have been created to protect people for their color, race, age, but no law has been created to protect LGBT people from the discrimination at their workplace.
Conclusion
Employees shouldn’t be judged by their sexual orientation and their gender identity, they should be judged by their qualifications and the exellence of their work. Many LGBT people have lost their jobs because their employers would discriminate them for being Gay, Lesbian, or other religious beliefs, because of this employees would go through health- problems and psychological problems. LGBT people deserve the same equality as others. The only way to resolve this is by letting the LGBT people know they are protected by the law and that they would be allowed to work anywhere.
