Lgbtq Community
The two groups I choose are the LGBTQ members and the single mother of four children living at the poverty level in the USA. Beginning with the LGBTQ members, I would like to find out about their families and life growing up. Were they supported when coming out? Did they come out when they were a child or were most of them adults? Where did they work and how was the effecting them? Any other information about how their life is going thus far. I would also find out how they all connected. What is their history as a group. Do they living in the same neighborhood (becoming very popular in bigger cities)? Do they know each other at all? What are some of the norms of LGBTQ communities? How do they feel about a straight person entering into their space? Do they seem to have a common belief system in their community or do they all have different backgrounds and beliefs, …show more content…
Once building a relationship I would try to find out what happened to the father. This may seem nosy, but it could effect how I minister to her. There is a great difference between a widow and a women with baby daddies. I would also want to know about her beliefs, do her and her kids have a church that they feel welcomed and supported by? If not, I would suggest churches with big children ministries so that her kids had somewhere to go and she could attend church. She may use this as a babysitting service, this is not ideal but it is at least getting her and her kids into the church. If she does this there is a chance that I could see her every Sunday and invite her to come to our church for her own good. I would also try to see where I could bless this family. Giving money is the easy answer, but this may create distance instead of a relationship. If there was ways I could bless her in other ways I would want to find

Throughout history, society has shown a particular dislike for groups of people who did, or did not follow the “social norm;” two groups that fit this criteria are people of the LGBT and African-American communities. With laws and other restrictions such as interracial and same-sex marriage bans, and the Jim Crow laws being passed against them, LGBT and African-American people have faced many trials. African-Americans were denied the right to be called human because of their skin color. LGBT people were denied their right to be called human because they did not find themselves attracted to who society felt they should. After reading George Chauncey’s “The Legacy of AntiGay Discrimination” and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, it has become apparent that there are many similarities between people of the LGBT and African-American communities.…

The LGBTQ community has developed and changed over the years, gradually becoming more inclusive of all types of sexual and gender identities. It brings a sense of belonging to a group of people and gives many that land in the span of the LGBTQ spectrum places that they know they can go to where they will be accepted. However the community that queer people have built around them and the acceptance of the diversity and complexity of how people identify themselves does not always transfer into other aspects of life. The LGBTQ spectrum is ever changing adding new identities all the time, however they are not always readily accepted by all. Gender and sexual fluidity being among the ones that have had to face their battles to have basic rights…

We have developed a relationship to the point where I call her my ‘momma’. She has been like family to me going so far as to care for my wife during one of the most difficult times in our married life, the loss of twins prematurely. In the holding area before surgery, Kiran approached us after we had just finished our prayer for the safe keeping of my wife and the hands of the surgeon and staff that would accompany her in the room. She leaned in to my wife and told her, “Do not worry God is here with you.” This singular statement has opened a whole new door to the relationship that I have with Kiran. She knew that I was in Seminary training to fulfill the call that God has placed on my life. Until recently, I had never inquired about her religion other than asking questions as to what her…

    C. I would also never tell them that they can call me if they need anything and just let me know what I can do to help. This is often somewhat insincere; instead I would say something like I am free on the weekends, why don’t I come over and we can do some cooking and gardening. Many people that have encountered a death will not ask for help so it is best to tell them that you want to help, and suggest some meeting…

I have left for extended periods for professional or academic ventures in the past but Vanessa and I both are deeply rooted in my parent’s home. Between December of 2008 and July of 2009 Vanessa lost a grandmother, two great grandmothers and a great grandfather. She was blessed with seven years of her life in which she was able to get to know the generation of people that she had come from. In 2005 her father moved in with his elderly mother and grandmother after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; shortly thereafter my maternal grandfather began to rapidly deteriorate, physically and mentally, at which time he moved in with us. Vanessa gained a great respect for the elderly as well as life experiences and knowledge one can only gain by exposure to older generations; however, these blessings came with lessons in illness and death and the real life challenge of coping with the sadness of end of life deterioration and the loss of loved ones. Vanessa understood that death was the inevitable end to life in the flesh, but she also understood that her loved ones were starting a new life in heaven. Instead of displaying exclusively classic signs of grief that would normally be seen in a child her age under the circumstances, she approached coping with a bitter sweet perspective that…

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is a community based on celebrating individuality, sexuality, pride, diversity, love, and acceptance. Also known as the gay community, LGBT people believe in promoting LGBT rights and fighting for social justice. UCLA School of Law (Gates, 2011) conducted four national studies and two-state-level population based studies. The results determined that there are approximately nine million adults in the United States that identify themselves as LGBT. Prehistoric findings show that the community has been a target for discrimination and persecution from individuals and groups that practice homophobia since 11th century BCE. Although today’s century has proven to improve the…

When I became a mother myself, and whenever the situation presented itself where my family would attend church together with her I would somehow make sure both of my kids were situated one on each side. I would then secretly take up more elbowroom than needed as we kneeled in the pew so that my kid’s elbows and hers would have to touch—wanting some of her faith to rub onto them. (That’s how holy she was!)…

Why is the LGBTQ socieaty so discriminated? The LGBTQ socieaty is discriminated because of their sexuality. Who are the people often labeled with the acronym LGBT? LGBT’s or lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgenders, are members of every race, religion, gender, and ethnicity. But how do we identify them, address their health needs? Unlike ethnicity, race, religion, gender, and income, which are all questions posed on the U.S. Census, neither sexual orientation nor gender identity are listed. (American Community Survey, 2013) According to HealthPeople.gov, this question is included on few state or federal surveys functionally ignoring that LGBT’s are represented in each and every one of these categories. (LGBT Health, 2013) With this in mind it becomes a little more difficult to pin down just whom the people are that make up this vulnerable population. Vulnerable because of their limited access to proper health care and a resultant risk for poor health as a result of their economic status, age, ethnicity, disease process and other factors. (Vulnerable Populations: Who Are They?, 2006)…

I cannot begin to argue about African American/Hispanic LGBT, living in New York City and their civil rights without remembering the public outcry against black civil rights. Although the focus of this paper is on African American/Hispanic LGBT living in New York City and Their Rights to Marriage I have decided to start my paper of by discussing the civil rights movement of the 1960 's. The civil rights movement of the 1960 's and the continuing struggle against race-based discrimination were rooted in the struggle against slavery. As early as the eighteen hundreds the United States legislative had laws known as segregation laws that limited certain freedom to them. They had to live in separate neighborhood, attend separate schools, drive in the back of public buses verses in the front where Whites were; African American would not dare go against these laws back then because if and when they did, they were unjustly imprisoned, beaten lynched and more for just trying to exercise human rights.…

The community most important to me has been largely invisible my whole life. I resisted to recognize I was part of the LGBTQ community for many years. Because of the way I was brought up, I avoided this community even when I knew I was part of it. However, in recent years I began to seek out other members of the LGBTQ community and continuously am amazed at the amount of support, acceptance, and openness this community has. The LGBTQ community has shown me how to fight against hatred with positivity, and how to be unapologetically myself in any environment.…
