Liam O Flaherty's The Sniper
War has no boundaries like age, family, and time of day. In the story,”The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty a sniper is stationed on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge and is tasked to “take out” any hostiles. While staking out, the sniper got shot in the arm by a fellow sniper and is faced many challenges in order to survive. Despite the Sniper’s skill, the sniper is realizing how war shows no mercy. In Liam O’Flaherty’s short story “The Sniper”, the Republican sniper does feel remorse for killing his enemy. Reason being, the text states, “The sniper looked at his enemy falling and shuddered. The lust of battle died in him. He became bitten by remorse.” This illustrates that after the excitement of killing his enemy passed, the sniper, realizing what he had done, became disgusted and started to feel pangs of regret at the sight of the dead man’s mangled body. Further, it also shows the effect killing the enemy sniper had on him, repeating the fact that the sniper was angry at what he had done, as it says in the text that, “...he began to gibber to himself, cursing the war, cursing himself, cursing everybody.” Lastly, he physically shows…

To be a successful soldier in war, one must endure extensive training in various situations, including but not limited to, medical practice, survival skills, and strategies. This is of utmost importance because without proper instruction or experience, a soldier could potentially die in crossfire. It can be challenged that in his historical short story The Sniper, Liam O’Flaherty utilizes characterization to imply that the Republican sniper has qualities of an experienced soldier in survival skills and combat training to show his successful survival and defeat of his enemy sniper.…

I want to be a soldier in the army once I have graduated from school. The book ‘American Sniper’ is about Chris Kyle and his life throughout the army and his time at home in Texas. I will be starting off at a higher end of the ranks as Chris enlisted through a recruiting center, I will be going through officer training to achieve leadership skills, and to enable a backup for myself if I was to ever have a serious accident at some point. I wanted to read this book for multiple reasons. One reason is that I have never heard of Chris Kyle before since the movie had begun being filmed, and when I found out there was a book I thought it would be really interesting, and it has been so far. The main reason now that I am still reading it is because now that I know what he has gone through within the army and the war on terror, I wanted it to be something like a guide for myself to get an idea of what basic training will be like, how war will affect me as a person and what is involved in being a soldier. I have always respected and admired the concept of a sniper in warfare. The ability to…

“Illumination Rounds” was published in 1969 and was a firsthand account by Michael Herr about his time covering the war in Vietnam. The essay is made up of a collection experiences. These vignettes often are about the stress and hardships of being in a war on the other side of the world, fighting for someone else’s freedoms. Of the ways Herr writes that soldiers dealt with the stress of war, drugs was the most prevalent. The primary drug written about is “grass” or marijuana. There are multiple accounts of Herr smoking marijuana with soldiers. In one account he goes to a soldier’s house off base and they smoke marijuana before some friends come over, then smoke more once the friends show up. A second time is when he is waiting for a helicopter to depart for where he needs to go. He waits with a soldier who is trying to get on a helicopter to a different location, but while they wait together they smoke a “joint” and share stories.…
