In 2004 a group of scientists found the partial skeleton of a new human species we had never seen before. Researchers called the remains LB1, also nicknamed the hobbit due to its small size. It was first believed that this new species, Homo floresiensis, was a descendent of Homo erectus that had simply dwarfed over time due to limited access to resources. However, newer studies have highlighted some of the more primitive characteristics of LB1, which lead scientists to believe that the hobbits branched off from the human family tree much earlier than previously thought.…

Jefferson City, commonly referred to as “Jeff” or “Jeff City” and abbreviated as “JC” and “JCMO”, is the capital of the American state of Missouri. Originally called Lohman’s Landing, it started out as an unassuming settlement of explorers. In 1821, the town was declared state capital and subsequently given the name Missouriopolis, until in 1826 it was ultimately renamed after the third United States president Thomas Jefferson. Throughout its history, Jefferson City became prominent for the Missouri State Penitentiary, a prison that was opened from 1836 to 2004, earning the gruesome epithet of the “bloodiest 47 acres in America.” Today, Jeff City has a population of 43,079 and a wider metropolitan area of 149,807, which makes it the 15th largest…
It's early October on the grounds of the University of Kansas where barren trees; swaths of dormant, beige grass; and the pale, limestone buildings have created a monochromatic tableau that looks like a picture in an old, yellowed newspaper. Amongst the landscape of what could look like cathedrals lies a building that brings many students to their feet in anticipation of what will happen. Indeed, arriving for a game at Allen Fieldhouse can feel like preparing to rummage through the dusty archives of college basketball. But after a 2005 renovation, there's nothing musty about the newly developed structure. And with one of the best teams in the NCAA holding court inside, Allen Fieldhouse is all about the traditions that…

Have you ever wondered what was it like being a soldier in Washington’s Army? Facing severe weather, imminent death, and sickness in the battlefield this is what happens in the American Revolutionary War when they fought over British taxation. If I were a soldier in Washington’s Army and I had the choice of leaving and getting away from suffering or either staying, having a chance to die I would leave. No, I would have quit due to severe weather, lack of supplies, and deaths and sickness.…

The faction that aligns the closest to my views is the Libertarian party. Libertarians are considered to be neither liberal nor conservative. Most Libertarians want to do away with the two party system. I believe this faction is the purest form of government. That being said, there are a couple things I do not agree with. For example, most libertarians believe that abortions should be illegal and want to reduce military spending. Overall, I agree with this party’s point of view the…
The Liberty Bell is an iconic symbol of “We for the People” America independence, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The bell was originally cast in 1752 in London, England. It was commissioned as a bell for the Pennsylvania State House in 1753, today is located in the Independence National Historical Park. The bell is 12 feet, 2080 lbs. at order, and made of bronze. The bell cracked at the first time when it arrived in Philadelphia, and was recast twice by John Pass and John Stow. After the Liberty Bell was repaired, it rang for a George Washington birthday celebration but it cracked again has not been rung since. The Liberty Bell showed the U.S. to help bring everyone together after the Civil War. The bell returned to Philadelphia in…
I have always loved my county fair in Tulare, CA. I love seeing all the different animals and aspects of agricultural together in one place. My most positive thought of my fair is educating outsiders about my animals. This was my first time walking thru the Fresno fair so it was a little different not being involved in the dairy barn. I was able to view the fair as an outsider in some way. This let me realize some major aspects and some things I have never realized about the fair.…
A. Phillip Randolph was known as a radical journalist, a labor leader, and a pioneer of civil rights. His mission was to unite blacks against the discrimination which shut them out of well paying jobs in the factories. Many whites and blacks knocked his efforts in the beginning but as time went by people started supporting his message. All over the United States committees of black people were forming to protest in the march on Washington. A lot of people tried to persuade Randolph not to do it but he insisted that it needed to be done. Finally recognizing that he could not be swayed, President Roosevelt signed an order to end the discrimination on plant jobs. This was the beginning of fair employment. Randolph started getting recognized as the most dangerous black man in America because he made someone so powerful do something he really did not want to along with another President by the name of Harry Truman. Randolph’s persuasiveness allowed Truman to sign an order commanding that there will be an end to…
