Life's Too Short to Even Care at All
Life's too Short to Even Care at All Did you know that depression affects 120 million people worldwide? How about that it also causes over 850,000 deaths a year? A lot of people don't see depression as a serious health issue, but it really is. The television show Glee often overlooks this issue along with most of society. But in one particular episode, one of the main character's speaks out against it by singing the song “Cough Syrup” by Young The Giant. Blaine Anderson, played by actor Darren Criss, sings this song while, unknown by the rest of the characters in the show, David Karofsky attempts to take his own life. It was a powerful and moving episode with a great message. Because of the context in which it was used in Glee, a lot of people believe this song is about contemplating suicide, but I think it's about a person coping with depression and the way he feels about it. Right in the beginning of the song, Anderson is telling us that life is short and that he doesn't feel in control of himself, or in this case, his emotions. He repeats this throughout the song, putting a lot of emphasis on losing control. He sings “the fishes in the sea, they're staring at me” which makes me think that he feels like he's not normal and gets stares from people constantly because of his depression. The fish represent the people who are always in groups, making him feel inferior because he is not included. Following this he sings “a wet world aches for a beat of a drum,” meaning that he's just wanting, or aching, for a normal life like the other “fish.” All he really wants is to be included. He is saying that people won't accept him unless he is normal. In the second verse, he starts to tell us how he feels with and without his medication. He explains that he is “coming up now out of the blue.” Here he means that when he takes his pills, he starts to become happier. If you have ever heard the term “feeling

Logic’s “1800” is a powerful suicide prevention anthem. The song was actually named after a suicide prevention hotline. The song features Khalid and Alessia Cara and is about a highschool boy who realizes that he has a crush on a boy that attends his school. Everyday, he returns to an unsupportive and homophobic family. With the bullying at school and the homophobia at home, the boy wants to commit suicide.…

The song takes on a more religious tone as it begins to question what people describe as “God”. It goes through the mindset of an individual who is troubled by the existence of a higher power and focuses on the idea that religious people think they hold a monopoly on the truth. The lyrics then attack God by giving it human traits, “If God controls the land and disease, and keeps a watchful eye on me, if it’s really so damn mighty, well then my problem is I can’t see who would want to be such a control freak”. This ideology then comes to a pessimistic conclusion that if no higher power exists, then nothing matters in the end. This theme then reappears in another song titled “Float On. Float On’s lyrics portray a man who goes throughout his entire day without letting his positive attitude spoil when bad things keep reoccurring. The title of this song is then revealed to point out the underlying lesson that you can have a nihilistic philosophy but be positive that nothing really…

The scene takes place by the docks, while Joe has flashbacks of all the tiresome work he has to do. As Joe is singing, his facial expressions show extreme fatigue. The lyrics, “Tired of livin’ but scared of dying” from the song, “O’l Man River’s”, are applicable to all the colored workers who eventually join Joe and sing shoulder to shoulder on how tired they are of working and not having a bit freedom. The song remains steady and mentions the Mississippi River and its strong waters as a way of representing the difference between societal differences. The song is a brief representation of slavery and the struggles and injustice that has to be faced by the colored race. A little change in a human and they are to be ashamed, being of mixed race counts as being colored and are to be forbidden from all white…

A simile is used when they say “given broad strokes of murder by a pelican lumbering shoreward, then diving with a splash like a car wreck, rising cradling a fish in his bill, and so emerging triumphant”. Although there is only one simile in this poem I believe this symbolizes a lot in the poem and about life. This effectively says how the pelican was determined to get the fish as food for survival and how the fish was helpless as part of this feat. It’s kind of like a cycle of nature. It is like survival of the fittest. Everyone needs different things in order to survive. The message of this explains how we must always be determined, never give up and we will be triumphant or victorious in life as the pelican was. We all strive to emerge triumphant in everything we do, it means doing the best we can always. For example I want to do well at college so I can have a good career in the future. Athletes always strive to improve and win every week, especially at the professional level, when they know their living wage depends on it. This is an example of survival of the fittest cause in the workforce or in the NFL if you don’t succeed or aren’t determined to make it, you’ll get cut and this is what this poem is telling us is you have to always be determined to succeed in life and have goals, just like the pelican had a plan of attack for how he was going to kill or “murder” the fish in order to survive, we…

The song starts out with a strang questioning of reality: “Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, No escape from reality, Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see”. They first two lines are rhetorical questions. They help establish the state of mind needed in order to continue with the song. The third line is a metaphor. It means everything is crashing down on him, and he cannot escape it. It seems to conclude that he is caught between a dream and awakening. The next couple set of lines are being used as transitions into the main part of stanza one, “I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy, Because I’m easy come, easy go, Little high, little low, Any way the wind blows, Doesn’t really matter to me, to me”. In the third and fourth line repetition is used in order to keep the lyrics flowing. The boy thinks his life doesn’t matter to anyone, his life is meaningless and the Earth does not care what happens to him. He does not care what happens next, he just wants it over; “any way the wind blows” him, he will go and it “doesn’t really matter” to him anymore. The next three lines show intent to kill by the boy, “Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head, Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead”. The boy has finally come to terms of what he has…

The first stanza speaks of an old aquarium, one that has obviously been abandoned and left to the elements. The second stanza speaks of lost memories, perhaps fond ones, of the author and the old aquarium when it was still open. The third stanza speaks of lost time and of time marching onto a new (and more often than not, not exactly better) tomorrow, with new things going up where old things once were. The fourth stanza speaks of the old being torn up and new things being put in their place as if the old things were never there. The fifth stanza talks of parking lots as straight-up destruction of something good (and of a loss of innocence).…

In verse two he uses rain as reference to his current situation. ‘You know it's funny when it rains it pours”(2pac). Meaning when bad things happen other more difficult situations seem to occur at the same time. Another figurative language that he uses are Idioms. He doesn't have that much , but he is trying to make it the best way he can. “I'm trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cent” (2pac). One of most interesting part of this song is when he talks about blaming his mother for turning his brother into a crack baby. “We ain't meant to survive , cause it's a setup” (2pac). Which goes in to explain that the government want the black community to…

The lyrics in the songs opening contain very soft, gentle imagery of things like angels and floating feathers "in a beautiful world." Contrast is then created through the use of obscenity and a change from poetic language into blunt speech ("What the hell am I doing here?") This contrast heightens the impact the persona's anger and frustration over not belonging has upon listeners, emphasising how strongly he has been emotionally affected by it. [That contrast is much greater, by the way, when you listen to the scala & kolacny brothers choir sing it because they're children and their voices are so angelic, contributing to the angelic imagery in the lyrics]…
