Attachment theory describes the common human need to cultivate long-lasting affectional bonds with primary caretakers. According to Corsini and Wedding (2014), John Bowlby proposed that humans have an innate tendency to make strong affectional bonds and that separation or threat of separation of these bonds causes emotional distress, sadness, and in some cases more severe depression.
