Life changing experience
People everywhere go through various experiences in their lives. Every experience affects a person in some way. The resulting effects can be good, bad, or a combination of both. Many aspects of my life have influenced my personality and the way that I live. Breaking my leg influenced my life dramatically. It began simply by playing the game I love most. Resulting in sitting on the sidelines, watching the season drift away. This experience affected my life intensely, yet still managed to make me a better person.

Midway through junior year in high school, soccer season began. All year everything was going well, my year always gets better knowing soccer has started. This was my third year making the varsity soccer team. Of course, I worked hard all through winter during pre-season to make this my best year yet. A few games into the season we were scheduled to play Adrian. On this hot muggy day, we traveled an hour in a half to play. For me, the bus ride to Adrian was one to remember. Little did I know that it would be my last for the season.

After an hour and a half bus ride, we arrived at Adrian Middle School. It was a half hour before game time and everyone on the team was excited to play. As the sun was beating down, the referee blew the whistle to begin the game. As usual, I started the game playing defense. In the past three years playing on varsity, I had earned my spot on the field. Playing "stopper?in defense was my goal from day one, finally my junior year I achieved what I had wanted in my soccer career. In my opinion, defense is the most important role on the field. Defenders are the last players on the field protecting the goal. A player must be able to see the overview of the field to achieve the best at being a defender. Playing defense gives the feeling of "owning?the field and having the trust of the whole team. Throughout the first half I continued to play defense as the two teams gave it their best.

Meanwhile, the game was almost half way over,

We were the champions. Skating as fast as possible, I rushed from the blue line to the net where our goalie was. Our team dog piled on top of one another and screamed with joy. Cheering and crying rang throughout the entire arena. I was elated, tears streamed down my face as I hugged my teammates. After a few seconds, our team recognized that we needed to shake hands with the other team. I understood the defeat and sadness in the opposing teams’ eyes because earlier in the year, I lost to an underdog team in the soccer section final. After the hand shaking, I was a given a medal from my coach.…

It started just as any normal Saturday would; December 8, 2012, I woke up, went through my morning routine and went to soccer practice. I was competing for a spot on the North Carolina ODP (Olympic Development Program) soccer team. Training was being held at fields about two hours from my house. I sat in the backseat of my dad’s car with my two sisters and as we rode to the fields I began to mentally prepare myself for how I would play my best and make the team.…

It was a frigid, windy, Friday night in October. The only light was the bright and beaming illumination of the stadium lights projecting over the soccer field. The bleachers were full, it seemed as if the whole school was there, and as a freshman with anxiety, it made it hard to cope with the fact, that I was going to be a starter for the varsity soccer team.…

We got on the orange track and it was a cool misty morning with the lights lighting up the field and track. The first thing we did is run a mile in under 8 minutes and then we had to run a second one in udder 7 minutes and 30 seconds. When I finished i was getting a drink when everyone was done coach split us up with who made it and who did not make it. When we were split up I realized that I was the only freshman that made it I felt pretty good.…

It was winter season and that meant basketball. This year was special because I got to play for Davidson Day’s seventh and eight-grade team. See at our school the middles school ran through 5th to 8th. The middle school basketball teams were divided into a 5th-6th-grade team and a 7th 8th grade team. This season was different; we would play more games and different teams. Also we got a new coach and older teammates. Tryouts were rough; the older kids were picking on the 7th graders constantly. I was the only one they liked because I was good. The season got even worse. The 7th graders never played in the games and sometimes in the locker room older kids would yell at us for messing up. This was horrible to watch and be apart of.…

Months passed, and they passed slowly. My passion for the game was gone because I wasn’t able to play it. I lost my skill, I gave up. I failed to do what I told myself I would, to comeback within the next couple weeks and to be okay. I ended up quitting soccer, I didn’t think I was good enough my scholarships were gone; no one knew my name anymore. And the worst part about it was I didn’t care. I was okay with letting go of my passion because I hadn’t interacted with it in so long. Playing for 12 years and giving up was hard at the beginning but it slowly got easier to do. My grades slipped because I didn’t have any…

As my childhood gradually transitioned into my adolescent years, I was old enough to realize my dreams of becoming a professional athlete wouldn’t serve as a career path. By the time middle school rolled around, I slowly narrowed down by ambitious list of activities to the one I was most passionate about: soccer. Through the first awkward relationships, real homework assignments and horrifying threat of detentions, soccer was always something I could look forward to.…

Junior year was here and I hadn’t played in a single game. While at soccer practice, yes I still attended even though I was on crutches and couldn’t play, my mom called me to tell me the results of it my injury. No one had thought it was my Anterior Cruciate Ligament, but it was. It had been completely torn in half and I needed surgery for it to be repaired. He had already put in my name and date for the surgery and everything. I felt like I was paralyzed from the head down. I couldn’t help but feel so torn up about not being able to play the whole season. I decided after the surgery I would try my hardest to recover and build my self better than what I was. I went to physical therapy every day I needed to and finished…

It was two days until the first game of my sophomore high school football season. My team was pumped! we were going to play Glenville a team that embarrassed us the previous, a battle we relentlessly prepared for since the last game of our freshman year. The sun was beaming off my pads, radiating the heat to make practice seem even worse then it already was. I was exhausted and looking forward to the end of my last sweat poring practice for the week. Our team was repetitively executing plays to make sure they were like second nature to us on Friday. Then, creating an unknown peace, Wheeler yells, "Last Play!" The…

The team got together the next week for the yearly season ending party. I walked into my coaches house with guilt still hanging on my shoulders. To my surprise though, no one seemed to be mad at me, even when I had lost us the game, and they had to be upset about not winning the championship title. When our captain had started to organize teams for a little kick-around session, I realized why no one was disappointed at me, or in general for that matter. It was possibly the pressure of winning or the excitement that I might finally live up to my sister’s standards, but somewhere along the way I had forgotten why my teammates and I played soccer in the first place. Although it would have been great, it wasn’t to gain a tournament title or win the game. It was because we all shared the love of the game. I didn’t need to receive a trophy or even come out with an underdog win to have fun playing soccer with some of my closest friends, but apparently I needed to freeze up to remember…

This season wasn't just any season though. We had a new coach, and we were also playing competitive soccer. What was competitive soccer? Well it's a lot different than our normal soccer. Instead of playing the local teams, such as Elkins, Lewis, or Bridgeport, we got to play in huge tournaments and against teams far away from here. The game was also a lot more intense; I remember the first game, against Glenwood's team. It was totally different than anything I have seen, we were getting to play at a college, and against a soon-to-be known rough team. We had started the game, and man these guys were violent. We started to retaliate, and my friend's dad was the center referee. I sure would have hated to be in his shoe, that’s for sure. It didn't even phase me how crazy soccer was this year until one of the Glenwood players spit at our coach's feet, and got tossed from the game. We soon learned to live with this violence, and we even participated in it more than anyone would probably admit to, but after all of the beat downs we had received from the other…

I was in third grade when my family decided to make the move to Leechburg, Pennsylvania. Coming from a much smaller school and town, my parents decided to enroll me in the local soccer program to make new friends. My Coach, Coach Steve, was an amazing coach and mentor. He was a modest man who came from a low-class family in Portugal, soccer, however, afforded him a chance to go to college. Today, he spends most of his time giving back to the community by running our local soccer program. When I joined Coach Steve’s team, I knew he had a lot to teach, and I was lucky to have him.…

I was still going to practices because as a very young age it’s hard to find someone as the same talent as me. As a ninth grader I made a beautiful pass to my teammate finishing it with a great goal and with this goal we won the game and claiming our pass to the play-offs bound. As the summer came around I was just being a lazy person not practicing soccer anymore, and I was running slower than normal. I didn’t know that not doing nothing on a summer was affecting me on my soccer skills. I believe that as a tenth grader was my terrible year because I got injured once again but this time it cost me my whole year out of soccer because I did a sprint and my hand stream pop. I started to pray to God that I didn’t want to lose my soccer talent, because is part of my life that helps me get all my problems out of my mind as I play with a soccer ball and more with my teammates. Anyway, that year was on other words thrown away to the trash. As my junior year I was recovering from injured but as I did I was unstoppable as the old days, my soccer talent didn’t get away thanks to God and my coaches motivation favorite quote was “don’t use injuries as excuses, and keep playing as you always did” having this on mind was when I realize that everything or almost everything was done…

My choice to join the army was my most life changing experience. I was able to experience things I would not have ever experienced, had I not gone into the army. A few examples would be, leaving home and being on my own, the difficulty of deployment and the price of freedom and finally the happiness of marriage and the heartache of divorce. Finally, the last thing I made a connection with is something no one or nothing can prepare you for. My experience in the army never taught me how to handle depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).…
