Since people were living in poverty, they got sick very easily. They could not do anything about it depending on what they had ( cold , sore throat , etc. ) . If you had a cold you would not really need to go see a doctor, it’s not that severe. Doctors were pretty picky on what they treated because they weren’t getting paid as much as they should. The number one thing that went around was Polio. It was also one of the only things doctors treated. Polio was very severe and it could cause death. Since the doctors treated little to no illnesses , it caused the sick people to suffer (encyclopedia.com). Many families were struck by depression. The suffering and the death rates went up and are one of the reasons for depression. Not to mention the hospitals went downhill also. Since no one had the money, they just had to deal with their sickness at home (encyclopedia.com). Because they wouldn’t let people into the hospitals, the illnesses got around to the community. The americans started to lose life. If they would have just treated people for free the towns would not have lost as many lives and they would have just all got through it together.
