Is there life on other planets? This is a question many people have considered at least once in their lifetime. According to Neil deGrasse Tyson author of “The Search for Life in the Universe,” all known cultures across all of the time have attempted to answer the question “are we alone?” According to Tyson, although Earth is the only known life in the universe there are many arguments that have been made that suggest that we are not alone (1) .
Earth is made up of countless other life forms, including but not limited to, algae, beetles, sponges, jellyfish, snakes, condors and giant sequoias. Tyson states “Imagine these seven living organisms lined up next to each other in a size-place. If you didn’t know better, you would be hard-pressed to believe that they all came from the same universe, much less the same planet.” Tyson goes on to describe a snake to a person who has never seen one. He uses the examples, such as, a snake is an animal on earth that can stalk its prey with infrared detectors and can swallow whole live animals up to five times bigger than its head. According to Tyson, the diversity of life is amazing and the fact that humans can co-exist with these other lifeforms on Earth (2).

Spiegel states, “Within the next several decades, with rapid progress in biology, with new space missions, and with large and sensitive new telescopes that are planned, it is conceivable that we might find any of these three kinds of independent life. In this way, we will be able to make a much more informed estimate of the frequency of life in the universe
