Life of an Entrepreneur - Jeff Bezos
Jeff Bezos – Founder and CEO of Amazon.com

An entrepreneur is a person who initiates and manages a business on his own at a financial risk. Some fine examples are: Sir Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Dhirubhai Ambani and Jamsetji Tata. Another great entrepreneur is Jeff Bezos, the founder of the online megastore, Amazon.com.

Jeffrey P. Bezos was born on January 12, 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the age of four, after his mother’s second marriage, Bezos moved to Houston, Texas. His grandfather had a ranch and he used to go stay with his grandfather and work on the ranch for months from the age of 4 to the age of 16. Working on the ranch was an amazing experience for him and he always enjoyed helping his grandfather with the chores. Bezos always showed a mechanical aptitude. As a toddler he would dismantle his crib using a screwdriver. He even rigged his room with an electric alarm to keep his siblings out. He also converted his parent’s garage into his laboratory for his science projects. After moving to Miami, Bezos fell in love with computers. He was a brilliant student and valedictorian of his class. Bezos went to Princeton University with an intention of studying physics; he graduated with a degree in computer science and electrical engineering.

Bezos started working on Wall Street at a company called Fitel, a start-up company that was building a network to conduct international trade. He stayed in the finance realm with Bankers Trust, becoming vice president. At D.E. Shaw, he was made senior vice president. He also met his wife, Mackenzie, a Princeton graduate, at Shaw. He was headed towards a bright and prosperous future in finance, when he came up with his billion-dollar idea that completely changed his life.
“I’m going to do this crazy thing, I’m going to start this company selling books online.”
With this idea Jeff Bezos started his billion dollar online store, Amazon.com. He also pitched this idea to his boss during a walk

Founded in 1995 by Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com has become one of the largest known online stores in the world. In 1995, Amazon.com sold its first book online, which was shipped from Bezos’s garage in Bellevue, Washington (Amazon.com Mission Statement, 2012). Many may not know that Amazon.com had a slow start because their online layout was not appealing. Within a few years Bezos attracted a few investors who took interest in his venture and invested approximately $140,000. Bezos decided to use the money to create a more appealing website to attract more customers. The sales for the next three years surpassed Bezos’s expectations. After analyzing the sales data, he found that people were not only purchasing domestically, but also from around the world. Amazon.com has grown from a small company to a worldwide business in just a few short years. This rapid growth requires a company to reevaluate how it does business if it plans to expand or maintain its marketplace for the future.…

According to the Oxford American dictionary, an entrepreneur is one who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. Two primary examples of great entrepreneurs in the business world would be the characters from Barbarians at the Gate, Henry Kravis of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and Ross Johnson of RJR Nabisco. Henry Kravis proposed a more conventional but effective manner of conducting business in his years with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. On the contrary, Ross Johnson enforced his own eccentric styling in RJR Nabisco while conducting business, one that was not common, let alone favored by many. Although these two tycoons had opposite approaches in the business world, both were equally effective in their own way. Not only did these two entrepreneurs contribute to one of the largest buyouts on Wall Street in 1988, but also they did so in their own individual styles.…
