His father, a farmer, worked hard to provide for the family.
Long's father worked long enough and hard enough to send six of his nine children to collegelong was not one of those. As a child, Huey Long showed an interest in education and learning. Long loved to read books. In the book Huey Long by Harry Williams, Williams states that due to Long's photographic memory, Long was able to "[memorize] large sections of [text]." Not only did Long have the exceptional ability to store large amounts of text to his mind simply be reading, but more remarkably, Long retained the information and "carried their import with him all his life" Long's favorite genre of novels were those dealing with leadership and power. Since Long's interest in education shaped him as a person, it would be important to take this into accord when casting for Willie Stark. One of the casting director's main priority should be to cast the role accordingly so that Huey Long's thirst for knowledge is shown through on the screen through Willie Stark. Surprisingly, Huey Long did not
receive much formal education. During his childhood he attended a meager elementary school. During his enrollment there he found more value in teaching himself. Huey Long's practice of self-education became his main source of knowledge. He attended Oklahoma University Law School for one term, then transferred to Tulane University. In merely eight months Long completed the law program at Tulane University, becoming a lawyer at 21. "The years between his graduation and his becoming a member of the Louisiana bar at twenty-one tested to the limit of [Long's] extraordinary physical energy and driving mental discipline. (Carter 4)" Long's political career got started soon after he got married and started selling "Cottolene", a cooking agent, in order to support his family. By traveling door to door, Long became a recognizable face and made many friends. These friends soon became the core of his political organization. In concurrence of his dream, Long sought after the only political seat opened to someone of his tender age of 24state railroad commerissionership. He won. From 1925 to 1928 Long "kept himself in the headlines and built up a large and lucrative practice as an attorney. (Carter 6)." By the age of 35, Long was ready to take his seat in the govenor's chair. "Louisiana's poor whites had come into their own. (Carter 6)" Long served as governor of Louisian from May 21, 1928 until his resignation January 25, 1932. In 1930 Long served as a Democrat Senator to the United States. Long's duties as senator did not become effective until January 1932, due to Longs preference to continue as Governor until his death. On September 8, 1935, Long was assassinated in the State Capitol Building in Batong Rouge, Louisiana. Two days later he died. No other Governor in Louisiana history affected the political and social landscape like Huey Long. His impact lasted far beyond his death. "Louisiana politics were based on a real, if controversial, choice given to voters. Huey Long, and his followers for 30 years after his death, pushed for an unprecedented expansion of governmental services in education, transportation and health. The anti-Longs, fiscal conservatives, opposed his plans to increase severance taxes on natural resources, to pave thousands of miles of roads, to provide free textbooks, to build a new state capitol, and to establish an extravagantly grandiose regime without sound financing. (Long 1935)"
Long brought a radical social platform of redistruibuting wealth to the national level. He was able to do all of this without being a serious threat to the President. In many eyes, Long was a present day "Robin Hood", but to most he will always be known as the "King Fish." Since the character Willie Stark in All the King's Men, by Robert Penn Warren, is so similar in many ways to Huey P. Long, knowing about Long's childhood, political career and legacy help in casting for the role. Not only should the actor chosen to play the role be ready to take upon the challenges of portraying such a dynamic person, but they should be humble enough to allow the true spirit of Long to come through and speak for himself.
