He planted a goat into the tiger exhibit and it very quickly reached down, snatched it up, and ate it. His dad said after, which you can find on page forty two of the story, “Tigers are VERY dangerous, I want you to understand that you are never, under any circumstances, to touch a tiger, to pet a tiger, to put your hands through the bar of the cages, or even get close to a cage.” Without that example, Pi and his brother may not have been able to learn that lesson. Our next example from his childhood is that Pi was always a very open-minded child, and he was always very optimistic and excited (Sparknotes.com). This could have affected how Pi stayed alive and his will to live. Without that kind of optimism, his life could have ended long before he would have ever seen shore. Before Pi was stranded on the lifeboat he had been…

First off, Life of Pi teaches that anything is possible with God and constant perseverance. Pi manages to live on a twenty-six foot lifeboat with a 450 pound Bengal tiger for a stunning 227 days! He can only do this by keeping the constant belief that God is present. While in India, Pi states, “Religion will save us” (Martel 27). He keeps this belief the entire voyage. For example, Pi states, “I practised religious rituals that I adapted to the circumstances. They brought me comfort; that is certain. But it was hard, oh, it was hard. Faith in God is an opening up, a letting go, a deep trust, a free act of love – but sometimes it was so hard to love” (Martel 208). Despite Pi’s low spirits, he continues to trust that God has a plan and will get him out of the current situation. Not only is Pi one with God, but also one with nature. He is deeply thankful for every sea animal he kills, using every part of the animal’s dead body. He even goes as far as drinking a dead sea turtle’s blood. Life of Pi is a passionate story that strongly reaffirms the existence of a God and for this reason, should not be…

Despite the fact that he faced many struggles throughout the novel (majorly part 2), he managed to remain optimistic and determined to find a way to escape. In most cases, a person would have just given up under the circumstances he fell under, but Pi had faith in getting off the ship and finding land. He never gave up despite the fact that he knew that he'd never see his family again, and he had to survive for 227 days with a ferocious tiger, and little food. The odds against his survival were prominently against his favor, but that didn't stop him. He had to overcome his fear of killing animals in his struggle for survival. Pi went from hesitating to kill a fish, to becoming comparable to a professional fisherman. Although there were many thoughts going through his head to just jump off the boat and put an end to everything, his perseverance overcame his doubt and he did anything possible to…

Before the accident, Pi was living safely and happily in India. He was able to pursue his religious interests, therefore pursuing self-actualization. This category is found at the top of Maslow’s Hierarchy pyramid, therefore if Pi was able to reach it, all his other physiological, safety, social, and esteem needs would have been met. Pi was provided for by his parents, he had shelter and safety, he made friends with religious leaders, had the support of his family, and he had gained esteem from others. During this time, he said “I challenge anyone to understand Islam, its spirit, and not to love it. It is a beautiful religion of brotherhood and devotion,” (67) an example of how he was…

Geography in literature can suggest new ideas about life in general. Possibly one of the most confusing parts in Life of Pi is when Pi gets stranded on the Algae Island. The geography exposes hidden meanings concealed in the story. I believe the algae island represents what happens when humans turn away from God and focus more towards secularist ideals. Soon you will be eaten up by your own ego, (i.e. the tooth in the tree.) However, Pi finds his faith again. This is represented by the boat. The boat never abandons Pi, which symbolizes Christ’s never-ending forgiveness toward us. There is a lot of material in part one about Pi’s trials of growing up. For example Pi gets bullied as a child for his name and has uncertainty about his religious stance. Consequently, the setting of the sinking boat and Pi’s journey in the life raft can represent a young man’s journey from adolescence to adulthood. Pi hesitates before leaving his parents room before the ship sank, which represents the desire to become independent. However, when he leaves and the ship sinks, he is forced to face the harsh world alone. The large ship represents family unity. The life…

“Bapu Gandhi said, ‘All religions are true.’ I just want to love God” (Martel 76; ch.23) says Pi in response to being rebuked for his practice of multiple religions. The notion that religion should not be discussed in polite company is demonstrated clearly by the scene Martel depicts in Chapter 23 of “life of Pi”, in which the pundits of Hinduism, Islam and Christianity come almost to blows over Pi’s enthusiastic practice of the three. It is this youthful fascination which equips him for the turbulent time yet to face him, and it is the Truth he discovers in the three religions, unaffected by adult-like notions of exclusivity which benefits him.…

One of his many musings about religion and the integration of it into our lives appears in Chapter 22, where he describes the end of two individuals lives.…

Richard Parker devotes all of the 227 days on the boat with Pi. The odds of survival with a man eating beast next to yourself are low, and then you add in the facts that they are stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for over 7 months. When Pi discovers that his only chance of survival relies on taming Richard Parker he has a great amount of determination. Before this realization Pi begins to give up in belief that there wasn't even the slightest chance of survival with a massive tiger on the boat. ‘’Only death consistently excites your emotions, whether contemplating it when life is safe and stale, or fleeing it when life is threatened and precious’’ (Martel.p.274) As the idea of fighting for life comes into Pi’s mind he starts thinking about the awareness of taming Richard Parker as these thoughts cross his mind he begins to pick himself up off his feet. Not only does the significant training and taming of the tiger increase his chances for survival, it gives him a reason to never give up, as Richard Parker becomes his only reason for living. Pi pushed to survive against humanity and the odds of not because he accepted that Richard Parker needed to live. Although there was doubt that surviving such a long time with a massive animal that had more than the ability to kill all, Pi beats those odds and although he struggles Pi deals with the significance of his…
