Life Of Pi Figurative Language
Commas are a meant to separate ideas or extend a thought. This extension also represents something that is infinite. This is depicted in Symborzca’s poem Pi. Pi is an infinite number and in the poems, commas are used to depict that thought. The number Pi represents life. People believe it to be infinite. The commas that come in between the numbers, “six five three five at a glance, eight nine by calculation, seven nine or imagination,” , show how the idea is the same, and is extended to make it seem infinite. The commas also represent the pauses. The pauses are needed so the reader takes the time to pause and comprehend what happens in the poem. This also adds onto the message of the poem. There needs to be times where people take the time to stop and comprehend what is happening and to absorb the sensations of life. Life is fleeting, and if people do not take the time to pause and take everything in, them they will not understand the beauty of life, and that people need to enjoy the pleasures of life. People need to live each moment to the fullest, but take pauses throughout to fully …show more content…
The length of the poem’s stanzas also play into the message or theme of the poem. Similar to punctuation, the structure and the stanzas help determine what the poem is about. Since most of her poems are about life and death, the stanzas match with this theme. Some of her poems have short, quick stanzas, such as Symborzca’s poem Photographs of September 11, while other poems have just one long, continuous stanza with just some punctuation, such as the poems Possibilities and Pi. The long stanzas represent how life may seem long, but the short lines represent how there are small moments that people have to enjoy and take pleasure in. The poems with the short stanzas represent how life is short and fleeting and that is why people need to live life to the fullest and not take any moment for

The poem itself is discussing a man's journey from birth to death and how all around him life is interpreted by material possessions. At the beginning of the first stanza, the sentences have been made very short and simple, as if to demonstrate the thoughts of a new born child. The first voice that the baby hears when he is born is Bobby Dazzler, one of Australia's first game shows. The very first thing that the baby hears is not the voice of his mother, nor the voice of his father, but the voice of materialism. This first stanza instantly creates the feeling of a home in the 1950s, where television was something new. The ellipsis that connects the first and second stanzas demonstrates a change in time, in this case, a change of a couple of years.…

The poem opens with the voice of Ulysses perturbed by his “dull” life. The choice of the apathetic word, “idle” in the opening line, immediately creates a sense of his tedious role in which nothing of merit has been achieved. Tennyson uses language such as “barren” to create a sense of futility, with no hope of transforming this “savage race”. In the sixth line, the voice of Ulysses says he “cannot rest”. Tennyson crafts his punctuation to reflect this: the caesura in the middle of this line reflects his inner turmoil and restlessness in the story.…

    Trio by Edwin Morgan

The unusual punctuation used in this poem helps to show how brief this moment was. This helps to emphasise how much of an impact this has made on him and how it has inspired him to write a poem about it. It shows that this was more than an everyday occurrence as there are many more emotions he has felt. The majority of the poem is enclosed as a parenthesis between ‘under the Christmas lights –‘ and ‘-and the three has passed’. Another clever use of punctuation Morgan has used is the brackets around ‘(and the three have passed, vanished in the crowd, for in their arms they wind the life of men and beasts, and music, the laughter ringing round them like a guard)’ the brackets are the guard of laughter protecting them. Nothing bad can get to them as their happiness is protection.…

The sentences are not structured in a conventional way, and it is slightly confusing, but also helps to create a melodic rhythm. When read out loud, the poem sounds almost like a lullaby, and even if the reader doesn’t understand the actual meaning, they still experience the atmosphere of strange contentment. The symbolic mention of the seasons and nature also contributes to this hypnotically content mood; the seasons, weather, celestial bodies, etc. are mentioned a few times, somewhat randomly; for example, on line three “spring summer autumn winter”, line eight “sun moon stars rain”, line eleven “autumn winter spring summer”, etc. These random interjections are almost like a chant, and break up the actual plot of the…

In life, you will have items and people you love without a doubt. However, through lines such as “Then leaf subsides to leaf” and “So dawn goes down to day”, you can tell that these beloved aspects of your life are blessings that come and go. Sometimes people might die, treasured items may get lost or break, etc. In a similar aspect, the poem also can mean that nothing will BE the same after things change. Your opinion of things, the way you view others, can change, especially with age.…

This represents the lost in the poem and what people are subconsciously thinking everyday. Lines 1 and 2 epitomize this meaning because it says, "Even when I forget you I go on looking for you." This leads on to how life is symbolized in the poem as well. People go their whole lives not realizing they are lost and need time to themselves to become the person they have the potential to be. Some follow behind others and are just a copy of the person next to them, in effect they are not their own person and the things they do are not of their true choice. This symbolism is conveyed in the last two lines as it says, "What they say you who are not lost when I do not find you." In conclusion you are not truly living life if you are not living as yourself and as the…

An important aspect is the structure of the poem. It is composed of two stanzas, each stanza containing one sentence that is broken up at various intervals. Both stanzas have each ten lines. The intervals that the sentences are broken differ from line to line, the longest line being 8 syllables and the shortest being 3 syllables. This structure gives the author flexibility, writing this poem like he is writing a story. He is breaking up the sentence into various intervals in order to create “musicality” among the last words of each line.…
