Although the lifeboat was the sole mode that kept Pi alive from the initial shipwreck, he knew that Richard Parker on board was the immediate threat he must escape to assure his safety and survival. This is solely the reason why Pi uses tenacity and will to motivate himself into fleeing the boat.Furthermore, in the film Castaway, Zemeckis features Chuck demonstrating a similar mindset upon discovering he’s stranded alone on a deserted island. Chuck is seen scavenging through the remains of the crash, finding usable materials along with scouting materials in the wilderness, which he can use to construct a shelter and fire . By accepting his current situation, Chuck is able to act upon resolving most of his immediate threats to survival by constructing a shelter and starting a fire to withstand severe weather conditions and shield himself from any lurking wilderness predators. This is possible all because of his will to persevere through the physical threats. Evidently, both Chuck and Pi struggled to grasp their situation at first, but soon realize their priorities and act upon them.
