The more I pressed, the more the fish struggled. I imagined what it would feel like if I were wrapped in a blanket and someone were trying to break my neck. I was appalled. I gave up a number of times. Tears flowing down my cheeks, I edged myself on until I heard a cracking sound and I no longer felt any life fighting in my hands. I pulled back the folds of the blanket. This was a big emotional moment for pi as he knew he was going to have do this for the whole time on the lifeboat. This made pi a tougher person in the inside knowing nothing was going to stop him.
Pi knew that this was going to have to change to be able to survive on the lifeboat as the food was very scarce. Pi was eating what he found on the lifeboat like it was unlimited knowing he was going to be saved in a few days. As Pi found out, "I had food rations to last me - 31 x 3- 93 days! the instructions also suggested survivors restrict themselves to half a liter of water every twenty-four hours. I counted the cans of water. There were 124. Each contained half a liter. So I had water rations to last me 124 days." (Martel 144) Pi's objective everyday was to have the necessary items for R.P and himself to survive. Pi became desperate eating flesh everyday. He knew that if he did not eat it he would die.
A second belief that Pi valued very much was praying. His family also valued this but we're not strict about it. For Pi, he was extremely interested in other religions along with Hinduism. So he went to other religionists to explain what each religion as to offer. So I asked Mr. Kumar, "What's your religion about? I asked. His eyes lit up. It's is about the Beloved, he replied. I challenge anyone to understand Islam, Its spirit, and not to love it. It is a beautiful religion of brotherhood and devotion." (Martel 60-61) Pi's passion for for prayer was so strong he bought a book learning every time he read it. Spending hours upon hours at praying at all different locations. After all, Pi just wanted to love God as much as he could at once.
When Pi's adventure started on the lifeboat he made sure not to lose hope at anytime of day.
Pi did not worry about much but when he did worry about something like Richard Parker, his family, or survival he would pray everyday until his mind was off of it. Without prayers he would never of made it alive. He prayed for God to let him repeat the same routine everyday without any trouble. Night: fitful sleeping and prayers. This shows that even the fifth prayer of the day is still as important to him as the first one is. (Martel 211) Pi believes that prayer affects a person's life dramatically.
At last, Pi learned that zoo animals are very territorial. Zoo animals do not attack other humans or animals because they are hungry. They attack because it invaded the animals territory now feeling endangered. Pi states, If you fall into a lion's pit, the reason the lion will tear you to pieces is not because it's hungry-be assured, zoo animals are amply fed-or because it's bloodthirsty, but because you've invaded its territory. (Martel 62)
Pi made sure that Richard Parker knew that Pi was his superior and to listen to the whistle when blown. This was represented especially before they left the cannibal island to make sure he did not leave without
him.
When Pi was on the lifeboat he did not know what to do with Richard Parker. He had many ideas but they all would fail so he decided to just keep him. From living in India Pi learned about some zoo animals and how to deal with them but Bengal Tigers were different. Bengal Tigers are highly territorial, and it is with their urine that they mark the boundaries of their territory. (Martel 155) Pi assured R.P. that he would give himself his own territory and respect it each and everyday so he would feel safe. Richard Parker did the same for Pi respecting the territory that were laid out for each other.
In conclusion, Pi was able to survive because of three beliefs that he learned in India: accepting cruelty when killing creatures of the sea to survive, praying gave him courage to not give up hope, and Pi had knowledge of how animals adapted to circumstances to survive. Pi had changed dramatically after surviving for countless days on a lifeboat with a Bengal Tiger. He never gave up hope and always prayed for God to guide him to survive.
