1) Pi changed his name: "He ticked my name off. And looked at the next boy. […] I was saved.[…] I could breathe. […] A new beginning." - (p.25)
This is when Pi first started his new school. He was tired of his name being twisted and made fun of so he decided to change it. Whereas before he was referred most commonly to as Pissing instead of Piscine, he would so forth be called Pi. This name is significant to his character development because it allows him o break free from the negative image he had and create and explore himself. It shows that he is starting over with a new beginning and taking control over his life.
"And so, in that Greek letter that looks like a shack with a corrugated tin roof, in that elusive, irrational number with which scientists try to understand the universe, I found refuge." (1.5.41) This name is important because of its scientific significance. Pi is an irrational number. Pi like and enjoys math and science. The fact that this number is irrational gives and elusive effect whereas the fact that it goes on forever, in a way, mimics faith and how its never-ending. 2) Pi finds out that Mr. Kumar is an atheist: "I felt a kinship with him. It was my first clue that atheists are my brothers and sisters of a different faith, and every word they speak speaks of faith. Like me, they go as far as the legs of resin will carry them - and then they leap." - (p.31)
Before this, Pi believed that atheists had no faith at all. That is why he was so shocked when he found out Mr. Kumar is an atheist. This quote shows how he discovered that atheists so have faith, just not in god, and this changed because now he has complete faith in science as well as religion.
