Life of Pi - Reflection Assignment

1. In not less than 250 words, write a reflection on any ONE of the above 5 topics.

Topic: On adversity

His parents had named him Piscine Molitor Patel after a swimming pool in France. Pi’s schoolmates made fun of his name. He was being bullied and teased by them. However, Piscine was never discouraged. He changed his name to "Pi" (the mathematical symbol, π). At first, he introduced his new name to his schoolmates in every lesson, but his attempts failed. He never gave up because he was tired of being taunted with the nickname "Pissing Patel". Until the Mathematics lesson, Pin resorted to stunt. He memorized up to hundreds of digits of the mathematic constant Pi and wrote them all on three blackboards. This shocked all the schoolmates and even teachers. Since then no one bullied Pi anymore.

From this, we can see that Pi is a courageous, intelligent and tough boy. He was brave enough to stand in front of everyone and to introduce his new name once. He was also a very smart and clever boy as he could memorize approximately hundreds of digits of Pi. Although his schoolmates bullied him, he didn’t give up and pull himself together. He was a resolute person and his character helped him face adversity later in his life.

I learnt to be a sturdy and brave person. When we face difficulties or adversity, we should not give up easily and feel discouraged. We must view things from different perspectives and try to use different methods to solve the problems. Besides, positive thinking is very important too and we must not escape from the

At a first glance, the title of the book, Life of Pi, is puzzling. Chapter five does however, explains the significance of the title. A part of growing up is dealing with flaws, everyone has different flaws. In Piscine’s case his name was his Achilles ankle. People at school pronounced it P. Singh, Sikh, and Pissing. Instead of allowing this to get to him he changed his name to Pi, hence the title Life of Pi.…

In the novel Pi's actual name is Piscine Molitor Patel. His gets his name from the French word for pool, which specifically is the pool in which his friend Adirubasamy used to swim in. His name itself connects to the concept of water or ocean from the onset. This connection to water is used to exemplify the theme of surviving which could be a reason he is named Pi since he survived in an ocean for 227 days. Moving on Piscline's nickname is Pi which a mathematical expression for an irrational continuous number that starts with 3.14 and then continues with a repetition of words. This repetition basically exemplifies the repetition of Pi's routine to survive on the boat. Every day he woke with one goal which was to survive, and his name adds to the theme of persistence because with the repetition and persistence he might have not survived 227 days. Moreover the mathematical expression pi is used to calculate a circumference of a circle. A circle represents unity and I think the author used to this to add to theme of unity. On the boat Pi needed to befriend Richard Parker in order to survive and maybe without him he would have not survived. More specifically I think this connection to a circle represents the Chinese symbol for Yin and Yang which cannot exist without each other. Yin represents the negative side while Yang represents the positive, in connection to the positive represents Pi who is hopeful…

In “Part One: Toronto and Pondicherry”, the reader follows Pi’s thoughts, introducing them to his beliefs and ideologies. What contrasts Pi from any other sixteen year old, is that he questions his beliefs and independently inquires about religious practices. Pi is dissimilar to the student body of his school as he has been brought up in the peculiar environment of a zoo, leading him to have an advanced view on societal aspects of his community by comparing it to the animals in his home. Pi is not inevitably more intelligent than others his age; however, he is ambitious; he was eager to learn and to experience all he could, a very significant heroic quality. Ambition, a quality that is shared among many protagonists, can be a positive characteristic as much as it can be a flaw. Pi had controllable ambitions that do not require him to violate his ethics, vouchsafing him as a true hero.…
