Life of a Student Athlete Athletics has played an important role in my life. It has taught me to be disciplined, work hard for what I want, and be able to make a commitment. Through sports, I have learned to be a leader on and off the court. In order to exceed, one must believe in themselves. One of my favorite quotes puts my athletics mindset into a few sentences, “Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe” (Gail Devers). The hard work and dedication one puts into the off season and practice is the player who will stand out on the court. Sports have taught me that things do not come easy and hard work will pay off in the end. I have been very fortunate to be able to play with a lot of great teammates and coaches. I learned a lot from my captains when I was one of the under classman on the court. Attitude on and off the court defines the kind of athlete that you are and the kind of person that you will become. Because of the great example that I had as a young athlete, I was able to become a great leader and captain as an upper classman and lead my team to the State volleyball and basketball tournaments my senior year. To be able to play in that arena meant the world to me, especially with the great teammates that I had. But, very few people remember how many games you won or lost, but they do remember how you treated your fellow teammates and opponents and what kind of sportsmanship you portrayed on the court. I believe that is one of the most important things I learned is that being a good sport on the floor carries over to many other aspects of your life. For me, sports was not just a game. It was a life lesson on how to work together to accomplish a common goal, to sometimes put aside your individual goals for the goals of your team. Being a member of a

Jim Thompson wrote, ”Sports provide an endless procession of teachable moments, which can be obscured by a win at all cost mentality.” I will explained with the information I have been given and with the information I already have. Sports, as I mentioned before, they can help in many different ways. For example, work when you are working and you stumble upon a problem that you can’t fix by yourself. You ask for help which is teamwork and collaboration. Jim Thompson Jim Thompson exclaimed, ”All distractions from the big picture life lessons that can include teachable spirit, resilience, grit, self confidence, teamwork, determination and empathy.” Finally one of the biggest and most important thing there is, don’t be selfish because you will ruined the point of the game for you and your teammates and then the point of the game will be for nothing no teamwork, no leadership and no…

First of all, playing sports is one of my favorite things to do. They teach me discipline and I must do and Not do what coach says. Sports also teach me good sportsmanship. I learn to love the game by playing my opponent/friends and showing how to take a win or loss. Last year playing basketball we didn’t lose but one game, I was devastated. I like to think I took the Loss ok but I just blamed it all on myself. I got to show my winning spirts in a ton of games that season, and I think I showed my happiness well. Our team didn’t brag or show off we simply just played our game, and the results turned out as they may.…

In this essay "Athletes and Education" by Neil H. Petrie, he shows how student athlete’s education can be neglected or even overlooked. Genre and writer would be related by Petrie being an English professor and how this inspired him to write the essay. By being a university professor he was able to see how the athletes were treated among the university. The ethos would be that he is an English professor of student athletes.…

There were 40 of my friends and peers who looked up to me for my guidance both on and off the court. I had started my freshmen year with most of the people on the team, so to be voted as their captain meant that I had earned their respect over time. I was finding a side to myself that I didn't even know existed. Throughout the course of my junior year, we started to win almost all of our games. Our team was making a name for itself after many years of being considered as an easy school to beat.…

Sports, my first passion, has been instrumental in shaping me into what I am today. In my life many temptations have threatened to destroy all that I have worked for. When life got tough and I wondered if it was worth continuing always the love of competition has brought me back. The thrill of stepping out on a football field, friends and family chanting only seconds left in the game, then victory. Then victory, the greatest rush, the rush that no drug could duplicate, this is the feeling that I live for.…

Sports are a very important part of my life, especially basketball. I have been playing my entire life because it was such a huge part of my life growing up with my father being a coach and my brother who was an exceptional player when he participated in grade school, high school, and college. I currently play for my dad who is the head coach and my brother who is an assistant coach at Holy Cross High School. They have taught me so much about the game and how it is much more than a game. They showed and continue to show me how basketball teaches team work, success, failure, and respect. Those are only a handful of things along with a plethora of others that the game teaches. But I am writing about basketball to tell a story of failure that changed my life forever. My sophomore year of high school our team made it to the semi-final in the state tournament losing to the soon to be state champions by two points. This loss struck me and my teammates hard but it made us willing to do whatever it took to get us one game further to the state championship next year and that's exactly what we did. We persevered and worked extremely hard and our dream came true, we won the semi-final game my junior year and went on to play in the state championship. We lead the whole game and then we fell apart. In the final quarter we depicted ourselves to hear that final buzzer and look at the score board seeing our dreams crushed as we lost by five points. This was more than just another loss it was a serious defeat to sixteen kids that worked harder than anyone to have their dream crushed in a slow and painful eight minutes. This was a life changing experience for me because it made me realize that if you truly want something in life you must work hard, extremely hard and be able to make sacrifices to obtain success. That is where basketball taught me a life lesson, in life if you want to succeed you must work hard, you must be willing to make sacrifices, and you must be able to accept…

It was a Saturday morning; I could hear the birds flying overhead, and the girls complaining of being too tired to practice. We were awake before sunrise, standing out on that field ready to practice. Maybe not so much awake as we were so close to sleeping on the floor. The smell of freshly drug dirt, as well as the freshly cut grass, filled our noses as we inhaled and deeply exhaled with our morning jog. The pain, or struggle, for some was the success, or competition, for others.…

The most important thing to do when on a team is to have fun. Being in a sport isn’t all about winning. “If you win through bad sportsmanship, that’s no real victory.”- Babe Dirdrikson Zaharias. If you’re focused on winning, you lose track of the passion you have for that sport. I’ve seen football players who will become frustrated and upset over a bad pass or turnover, and lose the heart for the game. But, I’ve also seen outstanding football players who will have an off day and use that to push them forward in training. Some athletic students will join a sport just because “they’re good at it”, that doesn’t mean they enjoy it though. To have true victory though, you must have the heart to go out on that field or court and have fun, because that’s what counts in the end, not how many points you scored or how good or bad you played. If you’re having fun on that field or court, you’re winning in your own heart and learning in the process.…

“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed” (Michael Jordan). Michael Jordan, one of the greatest players to ever play the game, stated this quote. Many basketball players go through arduous practices and work outs to ultimately get acknowledged. It is more likely for people to be driven to be successful through a continuation of failures and losses. MJ does a great job motivating individuals to work hard and put forth only the best effort. Not only does this apply in basketball, but it also applies to everything in life. This sport requires much patience and teamwork with others. Moreover, this sport is very important to me because it shapes the person I am today. Basketball has a lot of obvious influences on many things throughout the history of America.…
