Life Span Psychology- Prenatal Development
Prenatal Development
• In the life span development the shortest is the period of the newborn or infancy
• This period, which begins at conception and ends at birth, is approximately 270 to 280 days in length or nine calendar months.
• How life begins? o New life begins with the union of male sex cell and female sex cell. o These sex cells are developed in the reproductive organs, the gonads. o Male gonad is “testes” and female gonad is “ovaries” o Male sex cell is referred as “spermatozoon” and female sex cell is referred as “ovum”. o Male and female cells differ in two ways o Way 1: in terms of chromosomes
 In mature ovum, there are 23 matched chromosomes (XX)
 In mature spermatozoon, there will be 22 matched chromosomes (XX) and one unmatched chromosome (XY) o Way 2: in terms of preparatory stages
 Male cells go through two preparatory stages – maturation and fertilization
 Female cells go through three – maturation, ovulation and fertilization o Maturation
 Maturation is the process of chromosome reduction through cell division: one chromosome from each pair goes to a subdivided cell, which in turn splits lengthwise and forms two new cells.
 Maturation of cells does not occur until sex maturity has been attained. o Ovulation:
 Ovulation is a preliminary stage of development limited to the female sex cells.
 It is the process of escape of one mature ovum during the menstrual cycle. o Fertilization
 Fertilization occurs at the time of conception.
 It normally occurs while the ovum is in the Fallopian tube.

The ovaries contain hundreds of undeveloped female sex cells called egg cells; women are born with these cells in their bodies. The ovaries are connected to the uterus by a tube called a fallopian tube. Each month an egg is released from an ovary it then develops and becomes mature. The uterus is where a baby develops until birth. At the the lower end of the uterus there is a ring of muscle called the cervix which keeps the baby in place whilst a woman is pregnant.…

In the male, meiosis precedes sex cell differentiation. A single spermatogonium enters the first meiotic division as a primary spermatocyte. This division produces two secondary spermatocytes, each of which divides to form two haploid spermatids. Each spermatid then differentiates (by a process called spermiogenesis) into a spermatozoon by the elaboration of structural and functional specialisations that enable the sperm to fertilize the egg. Consequently, four haploid sperm result from each diploid spermatogonium. Sperm produced in the testicles are immature and not very motile. As the sperm make their journey through the tightly coiled epididymis, they mature and become motile.…

Urie Bronfenbrenner perspective on lifespan development was the bio-ecological approach which suggest that five levels if the environment simultaneously influence indviduals. He tagged different aspects or levels of environment that influences a child’s development. Urie Bronfenbrenner five major systems are called microsystem; which is everyday immediate environment in which children lead their daily lives. Second is the mesosystem; which provides connections between the various aspects of the microsystem. Third is the exosystem; It represents broader influences, encompassing societal institutions such as local government, the community, schools, churches, and the local media. Fourth is the macrosystem; and it represents the larger cultural influences on a individual. Lastly, there’s the chonosystem and it underlies each of the previous systems. These systems are the bio-ecological approach to the development that focus on the large differences in environments in which children develop. Bronfenbrenner wanted to focus on the process of development rather than concentrate on isolated variables. Most developmentalist focus on nature and nurture in the development of children. Bronfenbrenner’s theory is based on a child’s state of affairs and circumstances.…

This is the name for the sex gland that is similar in function to the male testicle. They are two in number and are located on either side of the uterus (womb). Each ovary is coverd by a tough protective capsule and contains many follicles. A follicle-sound is an egg cell sourounded by one or more layers of follicle cells. It is estimated that about 400,000 eggs (ovum) are stored in eachovary at birth. However, only one egg becomes ripe each month, once puberty begins, and departs from the ovary and travels into the fallopian tubes (oviduct). They also manufacture the female hormones estrogen and progesterone which is instrumental in the onset of the menstrual cycle.…
