Per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2014), the lifestyle choses that have been found to contribute to death in America include prescription addiction, taking unnecessary risks (i.e.: not wearing protective gear when riding a motorcycle), smoking, drinking, poor diet, being overweight, insufficient physical activity, and excessive sun exposure (i.e.: laying out outside or in a tanning bed, working outside in the sun) (par. 6- 12). At this point in life adults look at their life and see how it compares to where they thought they would be at this point in their life (Santrock, 2015, p. 460). This stock taking can cause the adult to make changes so they may achieve their life aspirations. Habits formed in previous years such as eating habits and exercise have a large effect of the health during this stage of life (Santrock, 2015, p. 461-466). For example, someone who in adolescence and early adulthood did not exercise and ate foods high in sugar and fat may now be obese. Another factor that causes lifestyle changes during this time are the discovery of new health problems (Santrock, 2015, p. 460). An adult who is now obese can develop high blood pressure or diabetes (Santrock, 2015, p. 460). This realization can snap this person back to reality. Showing them that their habits are leading them to an early grave, and causing them to form healthier lifestyle choses. At this point in life adults also think of the pain it will cause their children, grandchildren, and life partner if their life was to come to an early end (Santrock, 2015, p. 496-501). Adults in this stage of life also gravitate to religion and spirituality, because they are seeing their death getting closer and closer (Santrock, 2015, p. 477-478). Seeking an explanation to what happens after death, or securing their place in the afterlife. Many religions look at the body as a holy place that should be preserved, so they change bad habits and live the way “they should”. Just like every other stage of life many factors effect lifestyle changes made. However, the biggest factor that causes these lifestyle changes is the evaluations of their life thus far, the example they are setting for their offspring, and their ever-approaching
