Light Wooden Framed Buildings
Light wooden framed buildings were originally discovered when light partition walls were capable of forming a construction system by themselves. The system consists of timber studs frames assembled on site and tilted vertically or horizontally depending and what is needed. The idea was improved and accelerated with the availability of cheap mass produced nails and properly planed and cut pieces of wood. The first step to building a light timber platform building is to lay foundation walls to support the house. On top of the foundation walls would be placed a sill plate and in-between them would be a layer of foam to make an air tight seal. The sill play is held to the concrete foundation using anchor bolts. Anchor bolts are designed to hook into the concrete. On top of the …show more content…
All the studs and joists are held together typically by metal fasteners. On top of the walls would be another horizontal wooden platform for the next floor. Each floor would be assembled in a similar fashion. The roof is formed of rafters (sloping joists) or wood trusses. The standard interior wall sheathing is gypsum board (drywall), which provides fire-resistance, stability, and a surface ready for finishing. On the exterior it is usually plywood sheathing with bricks layered on top for a structurally sound and esthetic building. The light timber framing assembly is a lot faster than the traditional method it is light, and allows quick construction with no heavy tools or equipment. Every component can easily be easily transported. The building can be built in a variety of shapes, and can be clad with a variety of materials. There are a huge variety of products and systems tailored to this type of construction. The light timber framing spread the load evenly throughout the house with supports built in weak spots. As the load is spread evenly throughout the structure it becomes structurally

Fisher Building in Chicago could be a perfect example to demonstrate. This tall office building used an exterior structure called The Chicago school style, also known as commercial style. The Chicago school style mainly introduced new technology of steel-frame construction in commercial buildings. Unlike Monadnock across the street, which used earlier masonry wall-bearing type of construction, fisher building used skeletal steel columns to support the entire structure. The exterior wall doesn’t support the whole structure at all, instead, surface of exterior wall decreased and changed into windows to provide sufficient sunlight for interior space.…

In most bigger buildings the builders used bricks for structural support, they did this because before steel the tallest building was not over six stories. In the 1850’s Henry Bessemer created a steel-making process and that began the big booming sales of iron and steel products to the U.S. Around the same time another company, Cooper and Hewitt were using a different method of making steel called “the open-hearth” process. This method was a little bit better than the Bessemer because this process allowed manufacturers more control over how the steel came out (wermeil). These two creations was just the start of something that would change not just the country but the whole worlds way of…

Once we had our sturdy cross beams we decided the next step was to loosely place sticks on the side to create walls on both sides. Looking back in hindsight, our shelter was very haphazard. Ryan remained confident though, and I trusted him. The last step in completing the outside was to carefully lay branches with greenery still on them to act as a wind shield. I crawled inside to check out the masterpiece of a shelter we had created. I pushed the pine needles to the sides away from where I would be lying that night.…

Ronald Brunskill defined it accurately in saying: “A building designed by an amateur without any training in design; the individual will have been guided by a series of conventions built up in his locality, paying little attention to what may be fashionable. The function of the building would be the dominant factor, aesthetic considerations, though present to some small degree, being quite minimal. Local materials would be used as a matter of course, other materials being chosen and imported quite exceptionally”…
