on society like upset people’s sleep, workers not wanting to stay after dark and have their hours increased, it also changed how aware we are, it increased diseases, increased depression and even disrupted animals behavior. Overall the Light Bulb was an amazing invention that had both positive and negative effects on the world and our society.
The lightbulb has majorly impacted our industrial life both positively and negatively. The lightbulb was a “necessity for modern life” according to Thomas Edison. The lightbulb had a tremendous amount of positive outcomes for the industrial workplace, like extending work hours, safer work conditions after sunset, less fire hazards, etc… The lightbulb was very inexpensive to run and instal. These bulbs would help increase the production of products because of the ability to extend work hours after dark. This caused a major increase in production and more hours for workers who needed the pay. They also made the workplace less hazardous by decreasing the chances of a fire. Most fires in workplaces were caused by candles being knocked over or the candles catching products on fire. Since the light bulb could not catch paper or products on fire, this greatly decreased the number of workplace fires.
The lightbulb has also had some negative outcomes of the industrial workplace, like ruining workers sleep schedule, increase in depression, cancer and cardiovascular disease. These negative outcomes have been studied that when people were exposed to artificial light at dark, people were more likely to develop these conditions. Studies also show that if a woman lived in a place where it was bright enough outside to read a book at midnight, she had a 73% higher risk of developing breast cancer than a peer who lived in a neighbourhood that remained dark after the sun went down. Bird deaths also rapidly increased when the use of artificial light was used in skyscrapers or tall buildings. Some 10,000 confused birds die each year after slamming into glowing skyscrapers in Manhattan and more than 100 million birds crash into brightly lit buildings every night across North America.
Have you ever taken a moment to stop, look around you and notice just how many objects and inventions we use daily but don’t notice?
The lightbulb is one of those inventions people use and take for granted every day but don’t notice. Just think of all those times you had dinner late, or stayed up late to study or read a book. All of those times you needed a light source to be able to carry out the function you needed, which leads us in to the topic of how the lightbulb has impacted our society. The lightbulb has one use but it holds such a big responsibility and important task. The majority of the people on this planet have and use light bulbs for everyday use. It has helped us better our society and also save lives. It is a cost-efficient candle that lasts for years upon end, especially with new technology being created like LED light bulbs that burn brighter and longer. The lightbulb has impacted our society severly and has helped the world in so many aspects like creating new jobs like, electricians. Electricians frequently serviced homemakers who wished to install toasters, refrigerators, washing machines, vacuums and air conditioning systems. We take the invention for granted sometimes and when you take the time to really think about how much it has affected us, you can imagine what this world would be like if you woke up the next day and lightbulbs never
existed.
To restate my outline, the lightbulb has affected our society in a way that we now use them as an everyday necessity and can’t imagine our lives without them. They have had both positive and negative effects on our society. Even though the negative effects of the light bulb have caused cancer, depression, etc… we still continue to produce and use light bulbs in our everyday lives, both in the workplace and at home.
