Lighting Paper
I have been going to malls ever since I could remember; I always had my favorite stores normally due to their products. However, recently I have been very interested in how the stores were set up visually, including lighting, fixtures, and music. Throughout this quarter, I have learned so much about lighting in general and how much of an influence it has on the outcome of the store’s presentation. For this assignment for my store, I really wanted to create a store with my personal style, bohemian themed. One of my absolute favorite stores, is Free People. Last weekend, my roommate and I went to the Promenade mall in Santa Monica, although this time we weren’t shopping for our new wardrobes; but observing the different lighting within the stores. I entered several stores to get inspiration for my store’s lighting. One thing I noticed that I really admired, was the recessed ambient lighting. I think because the lights are recessed, they don’t look as noticeable, and it looks more elegant and professional. Being my store has a bohemian influence, I really wanted to set a very comfy, cozy and urban mood with the lighting.
I know that fluorescent light is used a lot in the different stores within the mall, because it gives off a blue effect. However, I really want my store to have a sort of yellow, orange light, which is given off by incandescent lights. All the stores that I went to go visit at the promenade also had accent lighting in the window displays to highlight the mannequins/ props, and accent lighting over some of the displays on the floor throughout the store. I don’t necessarily like when the

store is filled with mannequin displays, so for my bohemian store I only want a few displays with different accent lighting over that and the windows. Lastly, my favorite type of lighting to look for, decorative lighting. Free People had a few chandeliers in the store, to bring some class to the store. However, the decorative lights

Another important thing is environment. Urban stores have an environment of urban feelings. The urban building structure, buffed and tinted roof, original concrete floor, Glassed winnow, hand cut green wallpaper etc always provide a urban feel. The is a balance between design and functionality. Lighting throughout the store is also used to emphasize the focus on food.…

Burlington Coat Factory is not what I would call an aesthetically pleasing store. The fluorescent lights are almost blinding, the signs above the racks of clothing are incredibly plain, the displays don’t all match; Burlington Coat Factory is not the place to go for a relaxing shopping experience. But just because it doesn’t share the same aesthetic-oriented goals as retail establishments like Starbucks, doesn’t mean it doesn’t design its stores to best serve its customers. In fact, the plain, warehouse-like layout of the store is exactly what its target customers want. Burlington shoppers want to save and they want to know exactly what they’re saving. This is why Burlington Coat Factory has designed the layout of its stores and the displays to focus on the type of deal the customer is receiving and exactly how good that deal is. Burlington Coat Factory has also designed its stores to cater to its two main types of customers: shoppers looking for brand names at lower prices and more value-oriented shoppers who disregard brand names for low prices.…

On Saturday November 9, 2014 from 12:00 PM to 1:00PM EST I sat in the Centre of Salisbury mall in Salisbury Maryland. I sat on the north side of the mall near the entrance and at this end of the mall there is a movie theatre, a Game Stop video game store and a large sporting good’s store called Dicks Sporting goods and not to far off from where I was sitting on the east side from where I was at is the food court. I was sitting in a square shaped bench that had four sides to it and I was sitting on the bench facing in. Overall the environment was very nice with a large skylight type archway that let in the sunshine and made it feel warm in the mall and its was already decorated for the holiday season with xmas trees and flowers strewn throughout the corridors. About twenty five feet from where I was sitting was a wooden kiosk where they were selling throwback video game systems that attracted a lot of customers.…

Douglas Milsome uses hard and soft lights to create the different moods seen throughout the film. The techniques that stand out most to me are those within the boot camp barracks and those on battlefield. Within the barracks the lighting is harsh which show the “warmer” side to war; and then you go to the battlefield, where the lighting is softer but darker, emphasizing the shadows – even the uncertainty and fear of war.…

In the beginning of the play, the mood appereared to dark with mystery and intrigue. The lighting appeared to be affected by one major system which was the high sides. In other words high sides being a traditional perspective like the Zellerback Playhouse would coming from high up on the side and then a series of them (meaning the lighting fixtures, etc). Covering all areas of the stage, (e.g., downstage, upstage, upper stage left upper stage right, etc). The light fixtures all blended in a full wash on each side. In addition, it appeared that the lighting designer Jack Carpenter kept some of the lighting in a proscenium direction, the other aspects of lighting it appears he used more as back diagonal with color strollers on them, these would…

A combination of warm and cool colors helped to set up each scene. Particularly grim scenes were washed in red or a neutral light to set them apart from the rest of the scenes. It helped to show the mental state of the characters, thus revealing their true emotions and character. Special lighting, such as the front spotlight on the child with a sword and the backlights on the paper walls, were particularly beautiful as they broke away from traditional hanging lights. Many different colors were used throughout the play, but they did not overwhelm the audience. These colors worked well with the dull, plain colors of the costumes and contrasted with the black paint. Furthermore, it helped to establish the silhouettes on the paper walls. Without these special lights, the silhouettes would not have been as prominent and the audience could have overlooked the black splatters. The lights really gave the play its tone and, without it, the play would have been similar to other productions like it. This aspect of production was different and more noticeable than all of the others, thus making it the most developed in this…

Interior design can affect our mood in a positive or negative way. Creating a mood of intimacy, relaxation or comfort can be accomplished by using well-balanced light. Several studies show that light has a tremendous effect on human beings. For example, if the room is too dark or extremely bright, our mood is very down, but with just the right amount of light, the mood improves. For instance, lighting in restaurants is very important. Soft light with the combination of white tablecloths and a crystal chandelier will help improve the dining experience. It will create a mood where people tend to be open to conversation. They will stay little bit longer and perhaps spend more money. Hospitals are another example of the importance of lighting.…

Lighting is the deliberate application of light to achieve some aesthetic or practical effect. Lighting includes use of both artificial light sources such as lamps and natural illumination of interiors from daylight. Daylighting (through windows, skylights, etc) is often used as the main source of light during daytime in buildings given its low cost. Artificial lighting represents a major component of energy consumption, accounting for a significant part of all energy consumed worldwide. Artificial lighting is most commonly provided today by electric lights, butgas lighting, candles, or oil lamps were used in the past, and still are in situation situations. Proper lighting can enhance task performance or aesthetics, while there can be energy wastage and adverse health effects of poorly designed lighting. Indoor lighting is a form of fixture or furnishing, and a key part of interior design. Lighting can also be an intrinsic component of landscaping.…
