In this commercial, the feminine hygiene company Always portrays the opinion of men, women, young boys, and young girls about what the phrase “like a girl” means. First, men and women are asked to complete certain actions “like a girl” such as run, throw, and fight. When they do these tasks they seem to be fragile and afraid of completing it. Then when girls who are around the age of hitting puberty are asked to do the same actions they are very outgoing, strong, and brave. Always asks the question, “When did doing something ‘like a girl’ become an insult” (“#LikeAGirl” 00:01:04). As the women realize they have insulted young girls by doing the actions in a foolish way, they complete the actions as they normally would. There is a need to belong and a need for guidance in every young girl. In the commercial, the young girls run in a normal manner. This represents the fact that they want to belong, be strong, be their own person, and they have a need to be guided by an older role model. There is also a need to achieve and fit in. The young girls want to achieve all of their goals and fit in as any other normal person would want to. They just want to be able to do sports or other activities just as well as boys or men do.
