“Like A Prayer” Music Review By Karie Bundy In 1989 Madonna wrote and produced the song “Like A Prayer” along with Sire Warner Brothers Records, and the track was a hit single on Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” album. I love Madonna’s music, and in my opinion this composition is one of Madonna’s greatest songs ever. What makes this tune such a great melody are its lyrics, its strong instrumental beat, and its great vibe.
To begin I believe the song’s lyrics to be a great component of the mantra, the lyrics by themselves can have many different meanings to a person subconsciously. The lyrics to me have a very spiritually inspirational meaning, I believe that in life there are things that I am unsure about spiritually and those things seem strange to me. I feel something compels me to set out in search for the answers to my questions, the lyrics in the song that best delivers that feeling the speaker conveys in the lines “…Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery”(Madonna 29). I take the quoted lyrics to mean that it is god’s spirit that inspires me to seek the answers to my questions, and learn more about him so that I can come to peace with my doubts. To find those answers I can turn to god’s words, and when the words are heard a sense of tranquility will come over me. I believe the speaker suggests this thought best in the lines “…I hear you call my name/…and it feels like home” (Madonna 2-3). I translate the meaning of this quote to be, the feelings of love and safety I have when at home, to be the same feelings I will have by hearing god’s words.
Secondly I find that “Like A Prayer” by Madonna to have a great instrumental beat to it. The song uses a combination of pop, rock, funk, and gospel music which can be heard throughout the song, some independently but also in correlation with the other styles. The song begins with a strong rock solo of drums and guitars, which range from bass to acoustic. As the
