From a general standpoint the data collected matched the hypothesis formed, as the temperature increases the rate of respiration will increase as well. This was shown as the average ppm of oxygen was taken from each group. Comparing the data from the class is shows the effect of human error on the results. This lab uses lima beans in order to determine whether they were viable or not. If a bean is viable, it means that it is alive: able to grow and develop. The two ways to find out whether a bean is viable or not, are a tetrazolium test and germination test. Tetrazolium is a chemical that turns red in the presence of hydrogen ions. To begin the process of extracting DNA, the double-stranded hereditary material found in all living organisms, from the cells of split peas, a solution was made by blending split peas (100ml), table salt (less than 1ml), and cold water (200ml). The salt helped the DNA strands of molecules to stick together to be easily seen later in the experiment. The split pea cells were separated from each other by the blending process which had made them more susceptible to the next added ingredients. The blended solution was then poured into a strainer and into a measuring cup to alleviate any thick leftover debris from the thin split pea liquid. The question being asked here would be “Does a plant grow bigger if watered with milk? Or water?” In my opinion the answer would be milk because milk contains vitamins and calcium that water does not have, but the answer is to be found out later during the project. Well, it is known that for a plant to survive it will definitely need air, soil, water, light, and space to grow, but maybe if we replaced water with milk, plants could grow bigger and quicker, you never know. To test my theory, every morning before school I will water two of my plants with water like I regularly do, and two of my plants with milk which will be something new and will hopefully help my plants grow big and strong. The milk will probably help make the plants stronger. We humans need to have nutrients which we get from the food we eat that helps our bodies grow and stay healthy. Of course, just like us, plants also need the nutrients to grow. Milk actually contains quite a few nutrients, which may or may not help the plant grow bigger. The heating of brown beans, red cabbage, liver sausage and brussel sprouts was done in a water bath of 82.5°C. As can be seen in figure 1 the brussel sprouts heated up the quickest and took 11 minutes to come to a 77.5°C temperature or a 5°C lower temperature than the max. The other three heated up similarly with red cabbage taking 38 minutes, brown beans 42 minutes and the liver sausage taking the longest with 45 minutes.
