The Concept of Liminality as in can be seen in both texts
Major or minor, there are a lot of events in one’s life that can cause changes in thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and perception of life in general. A phase that every human being has to go through, these phases and events may cause changes that are reversible. Meaning the person is able to go back to the “old me” after going through the event or the experience; however, there are events or experiences, labeled as liminality, such that the person is no longer the same as before meaning his ideology mutated. In the first novel Night By Ellie Wiesel, we can observe that Moishe the beadle’s liminal experience altered his religious beliefs because Moishe used to be a Kabbalah teacher and the beadle of the house of prayer, but after the transition, he no longer mentioned God or Kabbalah. On the other hand, Okonkwo's liminal experience was in terms of social status, Okonkwo earned the title and became famous, wealthy and more respected. Also, another point is that Moishe’s liminal experience had negative consequences on him and made him worse. In contrast, Okonkwo’s liminal experience got him a higher social status in the clan. Furthermore, another difference is that Moishe’s phase of transition was rather psychological than physical and he was able to withstand the physical harm, but not the psychological; therefore he became another person with different behaviors. In contrast, Okonkwo’s liminal experience was more physical due to the physical fight and wealth. Generally, we can conclude the differences between the changes in the status of these two characters by saying that Okonkwo’s change was more physical and material while Moishe’s change was more psychological, generally, the social status of both them shifted to another level. To sum up, human beings are complicated creatures which throughout history they were in the constant change without stopping in developing themselves and enhancing. Liminality is one of those things that each individual should experience it, and literature is the best tool to express those feelings that each individual has
