Comparing and Contrasting Link and Beowulf
Throughout the ages of literature, one type of story is particularly popular and ancient. This is the story of the hero--a brave, courageous individual “who is admired for his or her outstanding achievements and noble qualities.” Often, they are depicted as a person who saves lives or risks everything for others. Such is the case for both of the heroes I will be comparing and contrasting. One hero is the epic Anglo-Saxon warrior Beowulf, a man who slayed demons and saved a kingdom from certain doom. The other is a humble knight clad in green by the name of Link. Link is the main character in "The Legend of Zelda" series, and experienced reincarnations throughout the many games. The first and foremost difference I can think of is the fact the Link has an emotional and character-building journey alongside his physical one. Over the course of the story he changes from a simple farm hand to the kingdom’s greatest hero, having overcome loss, grief, and a plethora of hard puzzles. Unlike Link, Beowulf’s character arc remains seemingly static during the course of his story, save for how he changed from a young prince to an old king. Personality-wise, Beowulf is also rather stagnant. He comes off as cocky and prideful, the text even stating, “But I will fight again, seek fame still,” which implies that a lot of his great works were performed for fame and attention. Meanwhile, Link has a humble and kind personality, and is well loved by those he knows. Even a mischief-making princess from another dimension became his greatest ally due to his kindness towards her. He’s not boastful about his efforts, but instead goes about them in a dutiful manner, risking it all to bring his kingdom back to
