Lipids
Fats, waxes, monoglycerides, and triglycerides are all types of lipids.
Triglycerides are a main form of energy for both plants and animals.
Triglycerides are broken down into 3 fatty acid chains.
Each fatty acid chain is further broken down into multiple groups of Acetyl CoA.
Acetyl CoA molecules go through the citric acid cycle and the electron transport chain.
12 ATP are formed from each Acetyl CoA molecule.
Carbon chains that are saturated with hydrogen atoms
Chains are straight and can pack tightly
Solid at room temperature
Main sources are meats and dairy
Known to be harmful to the heart and blood vessels
Carbon chains with one or more double bonds, so they have fewer hydrogens
Double bonds create a bend in the molecule
Liquid at room temperature
Main sources are nuts, seeds, and olives
Heart healthy
Serve as a major source of fuel for the body
Insulate the body and protect organs
Store nutrients, such as fat-soluble vitamins
Regulate and store energy for the body
Used in protein modification.
Skeletal and cardiac muscle both prefer to use fatty acids as their main energy source.
Cholesterol and fat are used to replenish the body and should come from dietary sources.
Cholesterol has multiple functions, one being in aiding in the structure of the cell membrane and helping it maintain permeability. The inside of a cell needs the cholesterol to help function normally as well.
Cell growth becomes disrupted when the body becomes depleted of cholesterol. Such a disruption in growth can lead to cancer which is caused by abnormal cell division.
Multiple hormones rely on cholesterol for their structural material.
Psychiatric issues could arise such as depression and mood changes like agitation and irritability when the body lacks an appropriate amount of cholesterol.
Diabetics have shown high blood sugars though out the day, increased insulin production, triglycerides and low density lipoproteins when maintaining a low fat diet.
