EXPERIMENT 1

AIM: Introduction to various Basic Instruments of Electrical Science

OBJECTIVE: Introduction to various Supply Systems, Ammeter, Voltmeter, Wattmeter, Energy meter, Tachometer, Rheostat, Loading Devices, Transformer.

Apparatus Required: Demonstration of various instruments like Ammeter, Voltmeter, Wattmeter, Energy meter, Tachometer, Rheostat, Various Capacitors, Various Resistors, AC and DC Power Supply.

Theory of Experiment: a) AMMETER
Ammeters are employed for measuring current in a circuit and connected in series with the circuit. As ammeter is connected in series, the voltage drop across ammeter terminals should be as low as possible. This requires that the resistance of the ammeter should be as low as possible. The current coil of Ammeter has low current carrying capacity whereas the current to be measured may be quite high. For this reason a low resistance is connected in parallel to the current coil. b) VOLTMETER
Voltmeters are employed to measure the potential difference across any two points of the circuit these are connected in

To ensure that the investigation is carried out in fair way, the wire must be measured as accurately as possible and the same circuit and power supply must be used throughout as different power supplies may have different voltages. The experiment will be repeated three times for each length of wire, with low, medium and high resistor. Also, an average should be taken to enable that the test results are reliable.…

Amperometry in chemistry is the detection of ions in a solution based on electric current or changes in electric current. Another words, the measurement of current resulting from the electrochemical reaction at the electrode, is a simple means of determining the concentration of electro-active species. The type of electrochemical cell used in this experiment is a three-electrode cell. The cell consists of working, reference and counter electrodes. The working electrode is the glassy carbon electrode, the reference electrode is that Ag/AgCl reference electrode, and the counter electrode is a platinum wire. The potential is applied between the working in the reference electrodes, and the current measure between the working and counter electrodes. The working electrodes provide the surface for electron transfer to occur for the system under investigation.…

An additional resistance, which is called shunt resistor, is placed in parallel with the galvanometer of an ammeter to extend the range of the DC ammeter. The added resistance must be less than the resistance of the galvanometer to attract more current and the ammeter itself will receive less current, but will not affect the total current of the circuit, therefore extending the full scale range of the ammeter.…

where is really , the difference in electric potential between the points (), and is the current. When analyzing complex circuits we often assume that wires and test leads have no inherent resistance, but in reality this isn’t the case. As will be demonstrated, the assumption fails when the resistance of the DUT isn’t significantly higher than the sum of the leads’, contact, and any other resistances around the circuit.…
